Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Of course the biggest decision to be made is whether to bring my own bike or try and find one to rent.
Seattle will keep you busy for a few days. Go to Mt. Ranier National Park, Olympic Mountains. Take a ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island. See the locks and salmon ladder in Seattle. Drive to the Cascade Mountains and wander around. See the old lighhouses.

Now I am at the outlet mall trying to get my wife and daughter new clothes to wear for our pictures today, because somehow it’s my fault the clothes they were going to wear don’t work. Sigh.

Just noticed a bolt on the mat next to the Allez. One of the chainring bolts unfastened itself.

Reinstalled it and did a bolt check on the entire bike.

Stay safe out there.

A couple of years ago I was riding with my better half and thought the French BB had unthreaded itself again. I found one of the bolt sets on the trail…and now I use thread lock on 50.4 chainring bolts.

Uggh, I had to ride home with 3 bolts on my fixie once. My chain dropped and I was like WTF? Then I looked down in horror. Tightened the remaining 3 bolts as well as I could (one of the nuts would just turn, so I only had 2 fully tightened bolts. I rode home very gingerly.

Speaking of socks. I saw a GCN video last night where Daniel Bigham, who seems to know a lot about aerodynamics, says the biggest aero improvement you can make, is aero socks. Your legs are two giant cylinders in the wind. Makes sense.

On one of my first rides on this bike the driveside BB cup unscrewed itself. I was able to make it home by screwing it back in by hand, needing to stop every mile or so to repeat the process. Absolutely flooded the threads with medium threadlock and never had an issue with that ever again

Sure was a fun one to remove when I swapped in a cartridge BB last year

Robots might be taking your job pretty soon, probably wise to save up...

This week Airbus released an image of an A350 test aircraft with cameras for automated pilot operations and/or possible single-pilot certification testing. This is why we should all start being concerned. They call it computer vision-based algorithms to advance landing and taxi assistance.

From Airbus "Airbus UpNext, a wholly owned subsidiary of Airbus, has started testing new, on ground and in-flight, pilot assistance technologies on an A350-1000 test aircraft.

Known as DragonFly, the technologies being demonstrated include automated emergency diversion in cruise, automatic landing and taxi assistance and are aimed at evaluating the feasibility and pertinence of further exploring autonomous flight systems in support of safer and more efficient operations.

More aero also without the drag created by the hair.

Not going to happen in my carreer. Cargo, maybe but not passengers.

Auto land has been a thing for a while now. I’ve never flown a plane with it.

Just watched a GCN video. We have all been doing it wrong. The most significant gains don’t come from aero wheels, aero frames, aero bars, shaved legs. shaved eye brows.

The most significant gains come from aero socks. That’s right, with a new pair of aero socks you can hop on your amazon eurocyclce and blow the competition away.

Do aero socks get lost in the laundry as much as regular socks?

I bought a 3-pack of Saucony wool socks last year and now I only have one pair. Pretty bad attrition rate there.

When socks have any appreciable impact on my cycling, you’ll know I’m doping.
