What to do with old headunit?
So I finally pulled the trigger and got the Garmin 1030. Its awesome, very pleased. My issue is what to do with my old 520. Works perfect but I am not sure what I want to do with it. Should I keep it as a back up that I will probably NEVER use or should I just sell it and get what I can get out of it? My wife the accountant says sell it of course and I get that but I fear I would regret it. I do have my watch that can record rides if I were to ever get in a pinch but can't connect power and such to the watch.
so what have you all done with your head units when you upgraded? AND would have you done something different next time?
thanks...

If it's preloaded with lots of routes, maybe you can get more for than you paid?

its really not "loaded" but I know it has some value just don't know if the $100ish I might get for it is worth getting rid of it. My wife has been reminding me all day to list it I can't tell what she really wants me to do lol

Unless you have a defined use for it NOW we all know that it's just going to gather dust in your drawer.
I'd sell it while it is worth something.
Take your wife to dinner with the proceeds...

Do you know a young and underfunded cyclist? That’s how I sometimes deal with usable gear that I no longer need.

I still have my old 520 (retired over 2 years now) and still have my older 500 (which was retired to make room for the 520.) For me, the sale value (particularly considering what eBay costs) on a used Garmin isn't worth the value of having a backup computer.
And as mentioned, I might ride with someone who is still using an old Cateye, and offer them one of my retired units.

Well my wife resolved this issue. She has been laid up for 3 weeks and 3 weeks to go after foot surgery. Anyways Jr. and I went to church this morning and when I got home the 520 was gone. She said she found a home for it. I wasn't super happy about the resolution but she was pleased so I guess I shouldn't care so much. What did really make me MAD was my new Garmin 1030 was the bundle package. For Christmas I got the new HRM the new one that is ANT+ and Bluetooth. I was saving it for spring or when my current one fails. it will be any ride now its in bad shape. Anyways I was going to save the HR strap from the 1030 and use it in the future being I go through them every 15-18 months. I found out she gave it away too. I was very unhappy about that.
So in the end "we" gave it away to a person who probably needed it or couldn't afford it and "we" gave away a new HR strap with it. I guess you know who is in charge at my house! NO she won't tell me who got it either

This I am just fine with it really, but the HR strap...that is a bummer to me. She will complain in the future when I need to buy a new one and I say you know we could have saved the XX$ if you hadn't. Then I am on the couch.....again!

A much older and well-off friend got me into cycling, lo these many years ago. Over time, he passed on some nice gear to me, which made my life easier. (I'm still rolling on one of his wheelsets: D/A hubs laced to Open Pro rims.) It's nice to do the same for some younger cyclists, now that I am older and bit more financially secure.
