Cotton. Feel the bars. I think I'll even try it on my cross bike.

Um...what?
Very few will know who you are referring to without googling. And even though I know who you are referring to, I have no idea what you are talking about. Did he use cotton bar tape?

Does this have something to do with cotton briefs and using too much front braking?

Why would you want bar tape that absorbs moisture?

My oldest kid wanted woven bar tape on her road bike a few years ago. It's the serfas branded version of that same stuff shown by btp.
What a process- there are like 30 patterns, the tape doesn't stretch, the tape doesn't lay flat, there is almost no cushion, it gets dirty really easily, and it stays dingy unless you use soap and a brush.

Total waste of time and money. I had some $12 black tape that was purchased to get free shipping on an order and threw that on at the end of the season. She never mentioned it.

I rode cotton tape for years (80's/90's) and it does have a very nice, tactile feel to it. These days I prefer a little more padding. Big fan of Fizik and Cinelli tapes. Might try Supacaz this year.

I want thick, thick bar tape. I use two rolls on each bar. But I have very big hands and can palm a basket ball. Tiny little bars are difficult to grip and hurt.

I have Supacaz on my gravel bike. The grip is nicely tacky, but there could be more cushion. I have LizardSkins on my #1 road bike. I like it a lot.

Oh yeah....I had forgotten about LizardSkins tape. I have a buddy who really likes it as well. Which thickness have you been using?

I have big paws as well could palm a basket ball since I was 13 years old and like over size grips on my gats but for some reason I like my handle bar tape thin.

I'm guessing that it also absorbs moisture (sweat, rain), too, which raises the chance of corrosion on alloy handlebars...Which is something to be avoided.

Since a few people have mentioned their fave bar tapes, I'll drop a plug for this one. I get about 7,000 miles out of it (but it could be run longer - I just like fresh tape), it's grippy as hell and stays just as grippy when wet, and it's basically made of rubberized plastic and so won't let moisture through to the bar.

My mom always tapes my bars, and says cotton is good, but silk is the best!

not sure how it will hold up but it was super easy to wrap and actually does have cushion. I had not taped a bar for several years and I was surprised how easy it went on. Tight and laid perfectly flat.

It is a Bob Roll...of the 7-Eleven team and was also on Lemond's Team Z. He also rode with Lance in some nasty rain to motivate him after his cancer stuff.

In terms of cloth tape, my old Langster had cloth tape in a harlequin wrap on some Zipp Vuka Alumina base bars, super comfortable surprisingly and it looked really good and help up nicely in the rain. Someone in I think New York has the bars now after they were stolen from a former friend who was a complete idiot leaving his bike on top of his car unlocked in NYC. I had sold him the bars after the old frame got cracked.

I think I might do it again but maybe do a thin silicone tape underneath to help protect the bars and also just for a little extra cushion, though I do like wearing gloves while riding.

Shellac your cotton tape will avoid weather issues and you will not corrode annoy bars. I have arthritis in my hands and use anti-vibration gloves as they are much better than cycling gloves. This is one of mine that needs the shellac touched up which is super easy and inexpensive.

I really like LizardSkins, but found, the last couple of times it did not last nearly as long, and for what you paid for it, thought it should last longer. But I did love the grip and cushion, I decided to try the Bontrager Grippytack and found I really like it.
