Missouri Rock Island Trail update

Yesterday officials from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Ameren signed an "interim trail use agreement" that allows the 144 miles of the Rock Island railroad corridor between Windsor and Beaufort to move towards development as Rock Island Trail State Park in the near future.

The agreement today railbanks the 144-mile section of the corridor and puts it on track for trail development within two years--if all goes well.

Rock island

I have a section of this near my apt in KC. Is there a good map of the whole trail system somewhere. It seems to just end in Lee's summit

Cool, the map still isn't updated for around my house. It's labeled as the Rock Island Trail and goes southwest into Lee's summit mo. I'm gonna have to start out and head east it looks like.

For some reason I thought the RI Trail stretched south from the Katy. I haven't been on the RI yet. That needs to change. I generally stay around STL.

Update

The rock island is being expanded through KC and will connect with the Katy trail via the rock island spur, I believe.

The Katy and RI intersect at Windsor Missouri right now. There isn't much of the RI east of Windsor yet; however, west to KC getting near completion.

Any updates on this?

Really great to see this, although I have not seen much news since earlier this year.

Does anyone know of any updates, or time to completion?

Gov. Mike Parson announced that the state of Missouri would officially take ownership of the 144-mile Rock Island Railroad corridor between Windsor and Beaufort, Missouri.

Nice. Sounds like the next GAP in the making. Especially the community involvement part. Wonder if there is any cheap real estate available along the corridor that would make nice B&Bs?

Earlier this month, the Missouri Senate dropped the funding for this from the state's budget. The Missouri Senate and House passed the budget without this funding, and the bill has been delivered to the governor for his signature.

Sad. Short sighted. Trails can bring in a lot of money to the economy, especially with today’s aging demographic.
