Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The good news, if any can be found this godforsaken time of year, is that we've passed the earliest sunset and they are very slowly starting to get later again.

We still have two weeks 'til the solstice, right? The sunset is getting later even though the days are still getting shorter?

Mrs. GeneJockey received her bassoon yesterday, as well as her Moderna booster. As a result, she put off the unboxing of the former since she went to bed early. So we did that this morning. It appears to be in good condition - not that I'd know if it weren't. Mrs. GJ is very excited, but a bit disappointed that it didn't come with a bocal (the curved tube that, when fitted, has a bassoon on one end and a bassoonist on the other), so she can't play it yet. It will be a significant chunk of cash to get a bocal AND to overhaul the instrument, though since she's not going to be trying out for the Symphony - or indeed playing in public at all - it's not like we need the most expensive treatment.

We have a winner. I'll leave it to the docs, but atenolol is a beta blocker which reduces heart rate.

Correct. The phenomenon is more pronounced further south, but it's reached the quasi north. YMMV.

Little Girl said that she wanted to make a bracelet for mom for Christmas, so I took her to Michael's, she picked out beads, cord and clasps. She came up with the bead pattern, we strung 'em together and I had to learn a couple of knots to finish it off. Being 5 years old, she's decided that she can't wait 'til Christmas and is giving mom the present today.

Sunrise is still getting later, by something like 50 seconds a day, and sunset is only moving by single digit seconds a day.

Solar Noon is also getting later, by about 26 seconds a day. It will keep getting later until February 10, at which point it will start getting earlier again.

I'd confirm by looking up my own sunrise/sunset figures, but I don't need to deepen the depression.

To the contrary, it's the first good news (in that respect) in months. It's my early Christmas.

It's the atenolol. Talk to your physician. If you can get off that medicine (and maybe take another BP medicine in a different class), I predict your FTP will increase 5-10%. Not kidding.

Man, I wish that I was on Atenolol so that I could get off of Atenolol and bump my FTP.

I jokingly tell people that one way to improve versus your friends (not ethical, of course) is to put some atenolol or similar medicine in your friends'/competitors' water bottles. You could drop them like a stone then.

My sunrise is still getting earlier for three more days and it's stupid early (4:30ish). Gee, thanks for that.

Who cares about ethics? We're talking about unsanctioned competition with no reward other than gloating over post-ride beers. So, can you write me a 'script, or what?

I had heard about the HR-lowering effects of beta blockers, so when I was diagnosed with hypertension, I made sure to ask my doc whether the meds she was prescribing were that kind. Nope. ACE inhibitor.

Nowadays with my RHR around 42, I don't think they'd prescribe me anything that lowers HR.

Probably easier to just give 'em the Team Cinzano treatment.

I'm here, trying to find a small morsel of hope amidst the blasting Arctic winds that you and your snow maniac cohorts keep sending here, and now you want to blame me for your sunsets. Shameful.

I've tried to tell fellow cyclists this many times but they always want to argue. A quick look at the sunset tables will confirm this.

No doubt. After that short day crap passes along, we still have to make it to March.
