Recommend me a 2.0-2.2” 29er gravel tire?

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Recommend me a 2.0-2.2” 29er gravel tire?

Recommend me a 2.0-2.2” 29er gravel tire?

I currently have 2,2” 29er Maxxis Icons on 25mm rims on my Salsa Fargo. Great tires for off road and cross country but too knobby for pavement which is still 50% of many gravel rides I do.

looking for a faster pavement roller with still good gravel grip in the 2.0-2.2” range. I like this size for the cushion over traditional 40mm range gravel tires. I’m a big Clydesdale so more cushion for the pushin!

Conti SpeedKing Racesport 2.2" front and rear perhaps. Dry riding. Supple. Up there with the ReneHerse filetreads for rolling speed.
You may want a bit more tread up front depending on your local surfaces and riding style.

I run that in 27.5 most of the time. But don't do any high speed corners across loose over hard, where you may slip out at the front.
Steeper hills over loose, you will lose climbing grip at some stage.

ThunderBurt 2.1"? has a low 1.5mm knob height. Maybe put that on front.
RaceKing Protection is 2mm+ height. Another front option. Protection casing is rather stiff though. There is a supple RaceKing Racesport.
ReneHerse may have a knobby around that size. 3mm.

Continental Race king at the back in 50-622 and Continental Cross king at the front in 50-622 or if you require more off road front grip 55-622

This is a classic XC setup for fast rolling and good control

Same as before, I d put the Terreno on the rear and the Mezcal on the front. I looked at doing for my 700c rims but I couldn't get the sizes.

I have Vittoria Mezcal front and rear. I think you can get them 2.1, 2.25 and 2.35. Good center rib ... rides good on pavement..... cushy big tire with smaller blocks rides good on gravel, trails, mild single track. I choose them over Contis because the Vittoria tires (At least the Black/Anthracite sidewall) seals tubeless without sealant.

I use schwalbe Furious Fred 50mm (minimal tread - super, super fast - nothing like it), and 54mm Thunder Burt. Both have very low rolling resistance. The FF is super fast and super light - I'm thinking the TB is gonna be more durable.

Forgot about the FF. Though it is worth pointing out they measure a few mm narrow. Mine were about 46mm on a 22mmInner rim.

On gravel/offroad that isn't too slippery they do roll very fast.
I felt when the tread was fairly new, their rolling on sealed roads wasn't anything to rave about. More-so with your weight over the rear tyre.

About 375gm, so pretty light for that size. Very supple.

The Gravel Cyclist did a short review a couple years back.

Yeah, he called them a cheater tire. Given that they are pretty much as fast as my 32mm slicks, but I can ride with 1/3 of the pressure - that makes them a lot faster on the rough stuff. I couldn't ask for more on a dry fast (20-30mph) gravel ride/race (or just a slow solo endurance ride). And they corner like a road tire on pavement (unlike the thunder burts, which corner like a monster truck in comparison).

a good recommendation. I actually have a hardly used set of 38mm Gravelkings from my wife’s old bike. Wish I could swap someone for some 50mm ones! I might just try and sell them.

I checked them out and read the interview. Hadn’t heard of these before. Hard to believe by looking at them they’d be fast as a slick. Must be very light casing, as indicated by weight. I’d be sorta concerned about durability. A little hard to find online too.

I'd be concerned about FF durability too. I use it on the front, so it gets no wear and tear. It certainly spins up fast, allows me to run low pressure and keeps me on course.
I've loved the Maxis Rambler too in 40mm size, but they make a 45 and a 50mm too. Its similar in that it is a low height knob fast rolling tire that doesn't have the GK-SK issues (tight knob spacing causing it to throw rocks at your frame and load up with mud). I use the rambler for Gravel and CX races.

Rode those 2.2 MAXXIS ikon again today and was reminded how much I love them on Iowa Gravel. Now that I’ve got ~1000 miles on them, they’re rolling a little smoother on pavement with the center nubs a little worn, still a bit noisy.

I think I might finish this autumn gravel season on the Ikons and swap to Vittoria Mezcals in the spring after the snow is gone. Will watch for deals and buy them on sale.

I should add that I have another wheelset, 29x35mm rims with 2.8” Terevail Coronado’s. These are awesome for serious mud, dirt and Mt Bike trails. Like having two different wheel sets for different rides.

LMAO. Where did that come from?
I did a century ride on them once with my wife. They are slow and heavy boat anchors. Exactly what I wanted for a long ride with my wife. I thought they would be usefull for an ebike, but IMHO, they are too slow and stiff and heavy even for that.

Wow, those look identical to an old set of 26" MTB race tires I had from Bontrager. Great tires - maybe I'll get a set
