Not your everyday ride...
On my ride this morning, I had to cut it short because the road was inaccessible due to...well...a cattle drive.

this is from last spring... had to turn back because of a waterfall that was out of control. Not likely to be that way this year, as the snow pack is a lot smaller than last year. the bridge has a expanded metal grate, because i hear this is a normal occurrence.

You don't ride past a cattle drives. They absolutely freak out and frankly I don't feel like getting run over by 1000+ pound animals. Farmers I have talked to said it's better to stop and get off the bike and let them pass. Unfortunately, after that you spend a lot of time dodging all the cow pie splatter on the road and trying to keep that off the bike.
Now, when I do turn around is when I run into the sheep herder in the hills in the spring. The big Anatolian Shepherd dogs like to wait to chase when I'm going uphill on a mountain bike. A couple of close calls over the years means I have no problem turning around when I first start seeing sheep

A couple years ago, I encountered this guy towing a fiberglass rhinoceros on the bike path just north of Ventura. He was riding the entire coast from Canada south to bring attention to "Save the Rhinos". A friend of mine also saw him up near Seattle, a few weeks earlier.

I was interning for a fellow who worked in rhino conservation so they somehow had gotten in touch with each other. Grabbed a beer in downtown SD afterwards...good times.

Cycle Oregon's rest day option ride was stopped and turned back 12 miles out by a cattle crossing. A lot of cattle. It would have been a long wait. 2013. Diamond to French Glen in southeast Oregon.

I’ve had this exact problem, but with sheep. They appeared at the bottom of a 15% downgrade, somewhere just south of La Rochelle, France as I recall it.

Years ago when I lived in Texas I was on a group ride where a single cow had gotten out and was running along the fence line parallel to the road. Scary stuff, we were very happy when it slowed down and we just booked it out of there.

That first photo reminded me of the top of Santa Rita Pass on the 2017 Eroica California ride. We waited 10-15 minutes for the "herd" to pass.

Oh, and I saw that rhino guy while I was driving further up the coast by Arcata. That was a sight!
