I just picked this 1984 Fuji touring series III up on marketplace and it looks like a nice frame but some original parts replaced. Rear wheel, chainring, seat and maybe a few other small parts. I am looking forward to getting ideas and seeing what other members have accomplished with their vintage Fuji touring bike’s. It’s really great to see some post and itemized list and pictures of their bikes and components that work on their build’s and some of the outstanding workmanship completed. “Why reinvent the wheel”



My intentions for this bike are keeping it a touring bike but with a flat bar and trying to keep a lot original with the drivetrain and brakes but new brake lever’s. I would like to update to index shifting but keep the down tube setup, but I am not sure about a source. Thanks for any input or ideas from forum members.

You may like this bike very much. I sure do like mine. I did a complete tear down then treated and preserved the patina. Built it back up, mostly stock, but added rando bars, recovered Vetta saddle, tiny package shelf on the back to support the saddle bag and keep it away from the R brake cable, and created a front rack by chopping and bending a R rack. I've done many miles and it's real comfortable. Don't know if I'll ever do heavy touring on this (gotta Voyageur mule for that) but I've taken the TS III on a couple "hub and spoke" tours. I'm very pleased.

I'd try running that rear brake cable through a shorter bit of housing, maybe even under the stay.
Simple curves are better than compound.

You might find some inspiration in this thread if you are going with upright bars.
Lots of upright bar conversions.
Microshift makes indexed thumbies that can be used instead of the shifters on the down tube.

Wow! Jack Taylor with all the old hardware. Cool! I got my wife and I Jack Taylor Touring bikes in '74. Mine was stolen 30 yrs. ago when I rode it to work. My wife still rides her's as her preferred bike.

I just picked up a Nishiki from '87 with downtube shifters, the rear is 6-speed indexed. Don't know the model # offhand, I'll try to look it up on velobase. That said, I'd echo what OTS said about the shifters. I've ridden a couple of flat-bar downtube-shifted bikes (including the Nishiki I just bought), only for short times, but still didn't like it. I think flat bar conversions are a natural for thumbies, and you can't get more simple and reliable for what you're seeking than 6-speed indexed thumbies. Not the easiest thing to find, alas.

It came with the rear derailleur so I added a triple, bartends and a longer fd to make it a true touring bike. T

he shorter chain stays never bothered me even if you might need to push the panniers back a bit.

Raleigh Wyoming. Couldn't find a Portage or Kodiak, so got this one. Finally got it set up for touring. Done a few short 1-2 day trips; just need more time off work.

Thanks for the welcome back ! Yes another Strawberry has came into the collection , this one more of my size and too good of a deal to pass up from the second owner where it had been hanging in his shop for the past 10 years . The original owner had purchased the frameset directly from Andy Newlands and Mark DiNucci at SRC . The Strawberry was built up as an all a rounder as most were back then , if you wanted to go out Trekking , go , but if you wanted a little crit action it was fast enough to hang with the group if your legs were good that day 😉 . The owner threw a grocery list of mixed components at it but it all works flawlessly on the Reynolds 531 tubing .
