I got 35 miles in with the new set-up. The thumb-shifter works as easily and as quickly as the original STI shifter. Well, there are only three chainrings ... I'm glad the trigger shifter works well on the rear.
I made some mid-ride adjustments to the angle of the bars and controls, and it seems pretty comfortable.

My "shakedown" route in Lake County, IL.

Nice weather... temps in the 70s.

SInce the "Proof of Concept" worked so well, I splurged a bit and installed a Rivendell thumb shifter. I have to give major props to Rivendell (Vince), who looked at an image of the set-up that worked for me, then replicated it on the desk before telling me which parts to get. I had picked out the exact opposite parts.

Finished conversion to "trekking bars". Friction shifting for the Ultegra front derailleur (triple), and XTR 9-speed for the rear.

Ready to roll!

Looking good! I like your blue tape.

I separated the brakes and shifters on my butterfly bars. I like it that way, so far.

Butterfly bar setup

My numb nuts solution is a Selle SMP TRK. Numb nuts no more!

I like the numerous hand positions, and the seat is the most comfortable for me - I have three of them now.
