A bike still utilizes a large cog, transferring the input energy to a smaller cog by use of a chain... The only thing that has changed (in watch parlance) is the case.
I do not assume steel is inferior. I do not know if you have noticed the by-line the moderators has put under my avatar? "Steel is real" is not something I have come up with myself... Even if I do have 30 vintage steel bikes. At the same time you might also have noticed that I am situated in Stockholm, Sweden, and that most likely means I do not have English as my native language. That said I actually chose my wording to allude to your use of words, to make my point - which was more important than the exact differences in meaning between accurate/efficiently/precise or - etc, etc.

I believe you miss my point. My point being - you are on a classic & vintage bike internet site. We (or at least most of us) are here because we like classic and vintage bikes (surprise!) Most vintage enthusiasts acknowledge the fact that progress actually happens (not always to the better) and that in spite of this are enthusiastic about obsolete technical things. We still like them and often are advocates for the use of them over placing them in a museum.

The irony, and that was why I wrote originally, is that you - according to your list in your post - seem to like classic old bikes and yet cannot understand the fascination of mechanical watches. There was a sneer about the guy you know as a "watchguy" and that because of mechanical watches being inferior you wear a modern plastic quartz watch. That is inconsistency. And that is OK. And modern plastic quartz watches are OK too. But please do not put down or minish other peoples enthusiasm over their hobby - especially not on a enthusiasts forum.

I do not understand why anyone would be into transistor radios (OK - do), vintage miniature trains, knitting or collecting vintage sidearms. But I do understand where they are coming from and celebrate their enthusiasm - and would never ever put them down or diminish their hobby because it is less accurate, efficient, precise or exact than their modern counterparts.

Hobbies are about passion - not efficiency.

By the way this is one of my vintage quartz watches. It was very accurate at the time and expensive as it was cutting edge tech. Today it is just average - #10

Given to me by my wife on our engagement several years ago, a Stowa Antea 365. Not vintage, but certainly classic:

My last wristwatch submission: Tudor 79160 Oysterdate chronograph, which I purchased brand-new while stationed in London back in '94:

Coincidentally (or maybe not?) I became obsessed with acquiring and riding vintage bikes during that same time period, and even today I still have a couple bikes from those days working abroad.

Also just to mention C&V and to drool at your watch collection. I've never seen anything like them. Or most anything posted.

These are my watches that I’ve found in thrift stores or pawnshops over the years, except for the old Gruen. That one was a wedding gift from my grandmother to my grandfather in 1945. I’ve liked watches since I won one in a $.25 vending machine in the early 80’s as a kid.

I had a Rolex 15 years ago, but sold it. I decided it was more fun to find watches then buy them new or at a dealer.

I LIKE this one, but I LOVE the first one! For me, Piepan Constellations are like '62 Corvettes, or Shelby 289 Cobras - I will never own one, but it makes my feel good to know they exist and someone's taking care of them.

Lots of beautiful watches. I love watches but they don’t love me. I think it must be in my physiology or something, no matter how carefully I handle them watches just don’t seem to last long for me. Although I’ve never had the Uber fancy one but a nice Seiko someone bought for constantly had issues, the beautiful watches I bought from Stauer and Stuhrling nope. I even knew several other crew members who had this Citizen Skyhawk but mine was always breaking

There are a number of forums for watch collectors. It depends on what you're interested in. The National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) is a good place to start.

I'm definitely enjoying the show here!

I try to keep my watch envy at reasonable levels by reminding myself that I have a hard enough time choosing which of my 9 bicycles to ride each day. If I had a collection like @styggno1 I would spend my entire morning deciding which one to wear!
Sour grapes.

I must have two to three hundred toy cars from the fifties and sixties some still in their boxes. I hope my bicycle obsession doesn’t take me down THAT road! “Honey , I need a bigger shop!”
Your dad was born in 1900. My grandfather was born in 1896, and I am an old man. You must be ancient.

Well, actually I am not young but certainly not ancient. My father was 54 when I was born. Right after entering the US through Seattle Washington. That makes me a 66 year old (turn 67 in October). He nor my Mum ever became US citizens as they had permanent visas (green cards) . That makes me both a British Subject and a US citizen , although I have never gotten my British passport like my brother did.

Black dials - so stunning in person, so impossible to photograph. Half the time you end up with a picture of yourself, taking a picture of the watch.

For example - this 1958 Lord Elgin Everest - even the artwork in the original ad has this problem!

It looks like the artist added the reflections to the picture!
