Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Accidents involving motorists

Have you had a crash involving a motorist? From talking to people that I meet when riding, serious accidents involving motorists are more common than I thought. A guy a rode with yesterday claimed he’s been in the ER seemingly yearly due to cars. I’ve crashed a number of times, but only had one kind of serious incident involving a motorist (he didn’t look both ways and I tried to take a line that was disappearing, my fault.)

I’m not worried about having an accident with a car, but am worried about crashing on a hill or something. Anyone else similar?

I have been cleaned up by a car entering a roundabout I was going around. The car stopped at the line at first but then decided to drive in just as I was coming by and hit me with the front fender.
Sunny day, bright orange jersey, 200 lumens flashing front light, no visual obstruction in the centre of the roundabout.

Have to ride like you are invisible to others. Don’t assume they will stop or yield fr you.

Yup. The best urban cyclists don't use lights for this reason.

Got hit when I was around 8 or 9 years old. Driver rolling through a stop sign as I came past. I went completely under the car. I was lucky that day.

Hit by a driver who ran a red in the rain. Sounds like I must have done better than you, that sounds terrifying!

Yep. The same reason I stopped using the lights in my car.

Nothing keeps you from both riding like they don't see you and using lights.

What do you know about urban riding? (That’s a rhetorical question, in case that escaped you.)

First line is right.

Second one is totally wrong. You cannot assume the lights will be 100% effective, but not using them because you are "invisible" is nonsense.

No. Irresponsible cyclists use this as a ******, illogical justification for not using lights.

You mean those *******s in YT videos splitting lanes, running reds, bumping cars and generally making us all look bad?

I’ll keep my bright lights.

Got hit by a truck mirror a couple weeks ago. It was on purpose. Truck had another lane and decided to pass me as close as possible without killing me. Besides scaring the **** out of me it almost knocked me on an on ramp into another car.

I know when I first started I didn’t want to use lights. Thought thr lights were too much. After a couple cars pulled out right in front of me I changed that tune. Depending on the time of day I sometimes run 2 front lights, rear light, and varia. Hope to have cameras in the future.

I know cyclist don’t seem to win legal battles when being hit by cars. I would imagine not having lights wouldn’t help the cyclist case IMO.

when I was a kid, maybe 10? yrs old? I was crossing a 4 lane road at a traffic like. I was crossing while the traffic had a red light & a car was already stopped at the light. I crossed in the cross walk. I was almost across but the furthest lane was empty. so I was passing in front of the car stopped at the light & entered that last lane to get to the other side. except a car, in that lane, approaching, did not see me. he slowed & I jumped off my bike but he hit the bike & dented the frame. he jumped out, apologized & gave me $60. I turned around & walked the bike to the bike shop & they straightened it out. that's about all I remember
