I'll be working on the front hub Saturday. My son is getting his Masters degree tomorrow, so we are all about that.
The front hub has alloy flanges and a steel barrel for the axle - have not determined the manufacturer yet. The spokes are iron oxide in 14 &15 guage and the rim is Weinmann alloy.

After digging and rooting up some (a lot) of Wisteria that my neighbor had planted a few years ago, I got to work on the bike.
I have decided on 700C wheels since that it what I have. All of the 27" wheels I own have problems, so I was hoping that the Weinmanns had the reach, but I was wrong. The pads are at least 1mm into the tire when braking - so lacking a pair of long reach Weinmanns, I am going to try a pair of MAFACs later - too bad because the Weinmann front cleaned up very well.

brake caliper reaches -
610: centre of slot 56, max reach 62
750: centre of slot 67, max reach 76
MAFAC Racer small: centre of slot 56, max reach 63
MAFAC Racer large: centre of slot 61, max reach 68
for 1.0mm you might be able to solve matters by filing the caliper's adjustment slot deeper

Just plugged the 1974 flyer price of $199.00 into an inflation calculator = $1,077.97 today = 441.7% inflation rate. Don

Yeesterday I got a few parts I that I wanted. I have MAFAC brakes on it at present since they will reach the 700C rims that I'll be using. Still thinking about using a rat-tail file to extend the the pad slot on the original Weinmann brakes.
I have made my mind up abou a few things:
Suntour barcons
VO Postino handlebar
VO city brake levers
Kalloy riser stem
MKS Sylvan Touring pedals
Here are a few photos

I got the electrical tape off of the seat stays today - btw I reccomend denatured alcohol and a terry cloth towell- and found this. It looked like a hole, but it is a deep dimple. I had to probe it with a pointed tool to see if it penetrated the tube. It did not, but it is deep. This is the left side seat stay by the way.
What you find on old bikes. Sorry about the poor photo. I am thinking that this was damage from an overzealous mounting of a bottle generator.

I have a small problem with the fork. When I installed the brake pads they were not paralell with the front rim. I tried to get good photos, but they just didn't show the issue accurately, so I made a drawing looking down at the top of the front wheel.
The odd thing is, is that the wheel seems to track accurately through the fork. I replaced the caliper with another and there was no difference. My first idea is that the fork is slightly twisted just below the crown.
I took it out for a short single speed test ride today and it doesn't feel squirrely. I am open for ideas.
BTW - the measurements using a tape measure.

1. Try another wheel
2. Wet the tires , roll it on the concrete and see if they follow one another in a straight line
3. Use new pads?
4. Tape stir sticks to the front drop outs and see if they go off from the wheel alignment
5. Use new brakes. Older ones might be “ adjusted “to another bike
6. Sell it to me, I will worry about it
I hope you get it solved!

The bike is finished except for bar wrap. I took it for a shakedown ride this afternoon and it rides well - even with a slightly tweaked fork (blades not quite parrallel). Here are some photos.

Hi 3speedslow, I noticed your interest in the ‘FreeSpirit’ in this thread.
As I posted (See #34, 41 & 45) I have a very nice one that I have retired with no plans for it.
Probably not economically practical to ship to NC from here but should you happen to be near Orlando at some point let me know, maybe we could work something out.
Happy to answer any questions or supply more detail if you are interested.
