Anyone know much about this old Stumpy?
A friend gave me his old Stumpy. Just wondering if anyone knows the year of manufacture and any other details. I stripped it down. Got rid of what little rust it had. Paint is chipped all over the place. I was thinking of powder coating it and using it as my "weird"/fun/mixed-terrain/commuter bike. I have a ton of older parts waiting for a frame.
Just wondering about it's story. Also, the only frame damage is some gouges on the chain stay from a dropped chain (in one of the pics). I used a Dremel to grind off the high spots, but some pits remain. Will powder coating fill these in? They're not that deep.

Based on the combination of graphics and chain stay mounted U-brake studs, the subject frame would appear to be a 1988 model.. Serial number?

I have the same year/color stumpjumper comp. it came stock with deore xt 3 by 6 gearing. It would be a shame to repaint the bike. It’s your bike but that is a distinctive paint job. The paint job looks to be in decent shape.

Yep, touch-up, and clear coat, this is to be preserved, its only original once.

Powder coat won’t fill gouges, but it’ll make them more noticeable.

My friend actually had two Stumpies (not the exact same vintage though). He's really tall, so he kept the larger frame and built it up with all the best parts from both bikes. I got the smaller frame and the "leftovers" LOL

Yes keep that original paint if you can. I’m waiting for temps to cool so I can finish teardown and clearcoat on this 89 Rockhopper. It was a bit sunfaded but all it took was a mild scrub with the abrasive side of a dishwashing sponge and cheap carwashing liquid.

Oh, and BTW, does anybody know what size seatpost this frame takes? It didn't come with a post, but the frame doesn't look 27.2 to me.

You could challenge yourself with a full respray and apply new decals. I hear Velocals(sp?) does vintage and custom work. I haven’t used them but Monkeyshred on youtube does and he contacted them for a period correct match.

The serial number 7L0646@, where @ is a baseball symbol.
The "baseball" symbol is for the manufacturer Koizumi of Japan. Early GT BMX bicycles had the same "baseball" symbol.
