N(old)BD. 1985 Schwinn Voyageur SP

While visiting my mom in northern Idaho, I’ve been hunting for deals. Mainly Craigslist and OfferUp, though I did find a great coop in Coeur d’Alene in the basement of a church.

anyway, I had found a stunningly beautiful 1987 Voyager for a good price but the bottom bracket and seat tube were cracked. Another listing had a pair of 1984 VSP’s. I was potentially going to buy both, but the other one was too big and had way more miles on it.

It’ll be fun to clean this old girl up, though she isn’t really in bad shape. Tires still have chicken strips on them. I didn’t really need to buy another bike, but the price was good, the bike is comfy and my other road bike is too nice to park in front of the market.

I still need to dial it in, and I probably need a seat post with a greater setback, but it’s still pretty sporty.

The guy said the original owner ordered them with Sachs Huret Duopar Eco RD’s, but everything else seems pretty original.

serial is 5D10512 and the badge stamp is 0505 and it still has half of the plastic on it.

So the serial number is a 1985 model, but the components are from the 84 catalog.

So does that mean the bars aren’t Cinelli? Off the top of my head that was the major difference.

I made my way back to Oregon from Idaho and found a few parts in the garage and some blackburn pannier racks at the local coop. The old Wright saddle has longer rails than a Brooks, so the 74 degree seat tube isn’t as noticeable.

The major outward differences to tell them apart from a glance that I recall were the decals and the Suntour XC derailleur vs the LeTech.

Sandro's chart shows a few other things, but not anything I could pick out without being close up.

Congratulations! The VSP is a great bike!!!
