yes we need pics and posting a question about the JC Higgins (a baseball player that endorsed stuff for Sears yes?) crankset is just as useless without pics.

Something don't sound right when you mention JC Higgins and Motobecane on the same bike, Sears had some bikes made by Puch or Astro Daimler in Austria about 45 or so years ago but I don't think Motobecane ever got into the Sears mix. It sounds like maybe someone's been swapping parts around?

The Mirage bikes that I have seen have all been 10 or 12 speeds. Sounds like a Frankenbike to me.

Sounds like someone built a 27" 3 speed rear wheel and converted a Mirage 10 speed to a 3 speed to me. The original post doesn't mention JC Higgins? Or was it there and now it's edited out?
If it's got a JC Higgins crank, on a Mirage, then someone's just plain been swapping parts around.
