Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The holes are a problem, because obviously you don't want to pinch flat. But lower pressures would hep with the cracks and chipseal, and you may be amazed at how much nicer it feels. Just changing from 110F/120R to 90F/95R made both the Battaglin and the Cannondale a whole lot comfier. I intentionally rolled through some patches of cracked pavement to test this, and it was amazing. I can still feel it, but the bike doesn't jump around.

Do you have room in the forks and stays for 28s? Because that makes a big difference in my experience.
Maybe on the '16 Tarmac. Not Contador, 25mm are tough to get in that bike.

I installed it and then checked to see how it shifted, and discovered I'll have to reset my limit screws when I swap wheels. It wouldn't shift onto the biggest cog, and then it overshot the smallest. . I ended up dropping the wheel out to get the chain back out.

Tubular tape arrived last night. Tubulars to arrive today. I guess the first thing to do is to stretch them onto the rims and blow them up, right? Second COVID jab today, so I hope I'm up for it!
Yeah, mount them on rims and pump up. I don't think you need to go to full pressure; just enough to be round. You can leave them like that for months, or years. Or days.

It'll just be days. I've never ridden on tubulars and I'm really curious. I'll stretch them onto the rims, blow them up and let them sit for a day or so, then finish cleaning up the rims and mount them. I want to do that on a day/evening when I won't be rushed. I have to decide between two methods I saw on Youtube. In both, you put the tape on the rim, pull up the backing strip on both sides of the valve and pull both ends to one side. Then stretch the tire onto the rim and pump it up enough to have some shape. Then you carefully center it and even it out. Then with one method, you put a pencil or pen under the tire to lift it off the rim, then roll it while pulling off the tape right behind it. With the other, you let off just enough pressure that you can pull the backing tape out from between the rim and the tire without tearing, and pull it all out.

Then check alignment AGAIN, and pump up to full pressure, and leave at least 24 hours before riding.

I suppose I should have sprung for better quality tires than Continental Giros. Excel was selling 2-packs of Vittoria Corsas for almost the same price as the Giros, but I dawdled and they sold out.

Got my second Pfizer jab today. Currently experiencing hypervigilance and suggestibility, but that's just me, not the vaccine.

I know that, on occasion, I've given some of yous the business about being old, dusty farts. I have to apologize, because it's not so funny when you start showing indisputable signs of aging yourself. I'm actually a little... concerned. You see, I was listening to some music while cooking, and Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" came on... and I started singing along.

Ugh, I don't know how I'm going to cope with this.

I know parody threads are frowned upon, but there are at least three candidates on page 1 in the 41. Must resist. MUST RESIST!!

We have plenty of experts on aging in here. A sense of humor is quite helpful.

Only three?

Due to my friend’s illness and the fact that LSS and I are close to his family and know what’s going on, I posted on Sailing Anarchy for the first time since 2015. The place is still a cesspool, but they sure have fun in ways we can’t. However, I’m going to keep it to the thread about him.
