My old Mongoose has twist-grip shifters, and the new Trek has levers. The LBS said I would love them, and they showed me how all I needed to do was press on one lever to downshift, and the other to upshift. I do like them more than the twist-grips for sure, but the upshift lever is underneath the grip and an awkward reach with my thumb. Didn't like that at all. But tonight after 15 rides and over 230 miles, I finally realized I can also pull on that lever with my index finger. Much better!

I'm starting to ask myself whether it's worth going from a 32 spoke to a 36 spoke, or what the next move is. I know spokes break, but I shouldn't be breaking that many spokes and I wasn't breaking them a month, two months, three months ago.

Once my spokes starting breaking on my Fuji Absolute, they kept breaking. I gave up and just bought new wheels with stronger spokes.
YMMV, I can't predict what will happen with yours, just offering my personal experience.
BTW, I was about ten or twelve pounds lighter when they starting breaking than during the two years I rode with no breakages...

Yeah I'm going down to the place I brought the bike from tomorrow and I'm going to ask them for options.
I'm hoping they can give me options under warranty, and I'm prepared to buy something else if it's reasonable price, but I'm hoping they have more stock than their website shows.

The lack of a kickstand on the new Trek bugs me. I hate laying it down on the ground, and I always worry about it falling over when I lean it against something in the garage. I found the Upstand online, a carbon fiber stick that basically props the bike from the rear axle (https://upstandingbicycle.com/). Ordered a non-folding version on March 22 and heard nothing other than a confirmation from Paypal. Emailed them for an order status last week, no response. I was starting to think I should cancel, but it arrived in the mail today. Seems nice, we'll see how it works this weekend.

I don't know if the problem has been fixed or not yet I haven't been for a ride. They fixed the broken spoke and we discussed options and they offered me one of these.
Jante
It feels stronger and the spokes are thicker (2.1mm compared to 2.3mm). I know it's not an overly expensive wheel but it is definitely stronger than the one that came with the bike.
The only slight bummer is that it's presta valve (doesn't fit shrader valve) and the front wheel is still the original that came with the bike with a shrader valve. I'm not overly worried about needing to carry two spare tubes because at the moment although I do 25ks a day I am also no more than 2ks from home so pushing the bike home isn't a major drama. In fact pushing it home is probably preferable to sitting on the side of the road at 5am trying to fix a wheel. I figure I'll test this over the next few days and if it fails I'll take it back under warranty and push them for something else, they did offer a $300 wheel but I knew that wasn't going to be a free change over. If the wheel works and feels right I might ring them up and ask them for the front wheel so I can have two matching sets.
Either way I guess I'll find out tomorrow morning, I just hope I don't run over the Easter bunny.

We don't have many diesel cars here, but you are paying about 40% more for diesel than we are here. Gasoline is a bit more expensive than diesel right now. Our tax structure has never priced diesel significantly less than gasoline - it is actually often more expensive.
Good for you getting out early in the morning - my riding is usually after dark at the end of the day, although now that sunset is around 7:30PM I have mostly daylight now. You can buy a bushing that would let you use a Presta tube in the front Schaeder wheel (Presta Valve Saver), but I would also probably walk home in your case before doing a roadside repair. I can be as far as 14ks from home, so I carry a spare tube and a pump. Knock on wood, haven't had to use it yet.

I sleep badly so my effort riding in the morning is more about something to do at that time of day...and because I don't like riding with traffic. I do it if I have to and I do it if I'm with others but by myself I like riding through the early hours of darkness. The fog is getting a bit thick at the moment, but that just means I stay cool
Thanks for the tube link, I actually stumbled across them yesterday afternoon and realised that would fix my issues. Of course in Australia at the moment the only places that have any of them want as high as $10 for one, so I think I'll definitely hit up Amazon and Ebay for options.
Rode 27.42 ks this morning (according to MapMyRide), no problems with the new rim so far so that is good and today's distance brings my April total to 152.3 km

I got to get in a ride while she was resting.
I think it rained a couple of those days anyway .
Rain coming in this afternoon/evening into tomorrow morning.
maybe it’ll dry up and I can ride in the evening tomorrow.

I bought myself an Apple Watch SE . It keeps track of my heartbeat and rate .
It recognized I was riding a bike after .6 miles and started keeping a record of my ride .
What was most interesting was my heart rate . Max heart rate was 185bpm , average 132bpm .
I checked my heart rate after climbing my biggest hill and it was 184bpm , after topping the hill and coasting down the other side , the rate had dropped to 91bpm . So it dropped quickly , which is good .
I have been diagnosed with “ controlled AFib”
Right now , as I’m typing this , I’m averaging 73bpm .
I never felt any symptoms for AFib , but have on two other rides , before getting this watch, felt chest pain and had to rest a few minutes , them it went away .
according to the age chart online, for my age my target range is 75-128 with a max of 150 .
My resting rate today is 54bpm .
something to watch , and something to discuss with my cardiologist next visit .

I'm not really interested in tracking my heat beat and stuff (I might be too shocked!) but it's interesting that programs like MapMyRide etc can tell me how many calories I've burnt without knowing my weight, size or how much effort I'm really putting into peddling. Obviously I believe the calories count and live by it, but it does make me wonder why they put it on there when it has to be inaccurate in so many cases.

I like mechanical watches, and decided I would look even weirder than usual if I was wearing an Apple watch on the other wrist. So instead of the Apple watch I went with a Fitbit Charge 4. Does my heart rate and I sync it with my phone so it tracks my route. Not very accurate (iPhone GPS mileage was +/- a full mile). I added a Bryton Rider320 for more accurate mileage and so I could see my speed. I love that I can get a couple of weeks out of the Bryton before I have to charge, even with the back light on all the time.
The Fitbit knows my weight, so I figure the calorie calc is probably reasonably accurate. Tonight it said I burned 1,097 calories, avg heart rate 124 bpm, max 161 bpm. Rule of thumb max heart rate for me is 220-60=160 bpm.
