Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Opinions on the Felt F80?

I have a chance to get what I'm pretty sure is a good deal on a Felt F80. It's a few years old and has been well used, but some of the basic components have been upgraded to carbon (fork, bars, seatpost). I can get it for around $400 or 450. My background in biking is mountain biking in my younger days and now commuting on a steel fixed gear.

My real question is, is there anything significantly wrong with a Felt F80 or will it serve me well as a decent, geared roadie for weekend rides in the 20-50 mile range?

I'm not sure what the mileage. It's my friend's older bike. It's a 2004 and he rode it until midway through 2006. I would guess no more than 2000 miles tops. I'm pretty sure it's still got stock BB and crankset.

I've decided that I'm going to go with it. I think I'd be really hard pressed to get more bike for 500. My friend also told me he'd toss in a set of SPDs and shoes (that are my size even, good until I can get another pair) and a cateye computer. He's asking 500 i found out, but still I can't imagine doing better than all that for the same price.

$400-$450 might be a fair price as long as he didn't crash or beat it.

My '04 F80 was my first new and real road bike. It was about $800 brand new and came with a carbon fork, Tiagra brifters and FD, and a 105 RD. I don't have any complaints about it. I would like to upgrade to full 105 at some point in the future, but the Tiagra is still serving me well after several thousand miles. It was a great place to start; but knowing what I know now, I would have spent that money on a better equipped, used bike.

I really like my F90, i believe the geometry is pretty similar if not the same. you should be fine with it. I average about 30 miles a ride, but have done a few metrics and a century on my bike with no problems.

I think the f90 through f60 frames are all the same, at least when I was looking that was the case. The difference being the component groups they come with.

Felt = nothing special at all. Generic aluminum frames. Their carbon bikes are nice however.

Yes, just like all other entry to mid-level bikes.

Right...I never expected or assumed it was something "special at all." I was just checking to make sure I wasn't making a fool decision taking my friend up on his offer as a relatively inexpensive way to get into geared road cycling.

felts get poo-poo'd all the time here.

i love my felt. there's not much i'd do differently with it if i had it to do all over again.

do you know that last time he had it tuned up? if its been a while, take it to an lbs you trust for a tune up. at 2k miles, have them check the drive train for wear, etc. may be time for a new bb and chain.

$400 for a 105 equipped bike is not a bad deal. Ride it for a few years, get your legs and then upgrade to something you really want.
