^^^^^^ That's due in part to the fact that the Sante brakeset doesn't have the eccentric cam release on the caliper like the Ultegra / Dura Ace of the same period would. There's just a push-button release on the lever, like the lower level Shimanos of the time. That button doesn't open the caliper as much as the cam release. That's one pet peeve I have about the Sante gruppo.

Found some "rusty gold" today. Landed a 1983 Schwinn Super Sport SP in my size. The very first road bike I bought when I was a kid with mowing money was a 1983 Super Sport. The SP is almost identical except for the upgraded components and the darker blue contrasting head tube. It needs some love due to being somewhere damp and getting some surface rust, but it looks like it will clean up pretty well.

So cool! Here’s mine. I stored the original saddle, shifters and rear derailleur in favor of something more to my liking.

I'll need to check it later on. In hindsight, it does not surprise me that for the same year model and frame size that they were built around the same time. I know Trek manufactured that way back in the day. I'm sure they would set up the frame jigs and knock out a certain amount of each frame size at the same time. I guess Panasonic built these for Schwinn in batches the same way most other manufacturers did.

Wow. Mine is 3F03292!
After comparing serial numbers, ours are both 1983 Super Sport SPs, Silver Blue w/ Blue paint, 25.5 inch size, assembled on the same day, and only seven digits apart on the serial numbers on the Panasonic built frames.

That’s great! Assembled the same day in N.A., and possibly brazed the same day in Asia…over 38 yrs ago. Yep, that’s definitely a cool factor!

Super comfy, all day rider, surprisingly fast when compared to my Merckx SLX, Bianchi SLX & other bikes with 25mm tires.
48/34 and 12-30 gearing means it will get up any hill around here, doesn't spin out until around 28 MPH.
Goes to the beach with me for a week or two in the summer, lives on the Neo2T trainer in the winter.
Crank and seat post will be polished next time it comes around in the rotation, also have BL-600 levers and Cinelli Calaido tape for it.
Super comfy, all day rider, surprisingly fast when compared to my Merckx SLX, Bianchi SLX & other bikes with 25mm tires.
48/34 and 12-30 gearing means it will get up any hill around here, doesn't spin out until around 28 MPH.

Doc, that's a nice resto-mod job. I like your placement of the Columbus decal rather than the "almost-out-of-sight" factory location below the FD band clamp. I have an '86 Tempo and Yep! these frames are definitely smooth riders.

I've lurked in this thread for a little while, and finally have a contribution! I just picked up this '87 Le Tour for a very low price off FB marketplace, this is the before shot, though I don't plan on doing much beyond replacing the cables and tires (oh and def the saddle).

Yeah, I have thoughts about swapping out the crank for something more like what it originally had, but I can't decide. I also plan on trying out a repositioned biopace setup, something more similar to what the OVAL stuff is doing ( really just involves rotating the ring about 2 hops ~ +144deg ).

A Son of the Cape Fear
I picked this immaculate World Sport up for a song a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't planned on buying a bike, but it was nearby. I also scored a NICE '73 Schwinn Hollywood from the same seller. It was a good day. I put two new tires on the World Sport, cleaned/lubed her up, gave her some new bar tape, and she rides great! Next project: bike storage solutions : )

I got this 1988 World sport yesterday at a yard sale for 5.00, The photos are after I done some cleaning. hat country was this bike made in? The build date stamped into the head badge is Saturday Dec. 26th 1987 , so I assume it was not made in the USA.
