I have a 26" mountain bike, old department store bike, in storage. It has been ridable. Right before I got my disk trucker I started working in to my fitness rides on it. I since got pedal adapters to get standard thread pedals on it.

If I was going to get that set up for winter commuter duty there are several things I would change - wheel set, crank, brakes, shifters/derailleurs namely. That is beyond the scope of what I can manage this coming season, but is an idea next year.
