Need a new wheelset for my mid 80s Miayata road bike. Recommendations for nice 32 hole fairly light rims? Thanks-

Are you after anything particular in looks? Silver/anodized? Vintage/modern? Wide/narrow?

Despite being unfashionable, there's a part of me that wants to build up one more set of silver Mavic Open Pros while they can still be had.

Probably go w/ something modern. Either silver or black. something that will fit a 19-32 tire.

The first question is.... are your current wheels 27" or 700c?

The next question is is this bike a 6 or 7 speed and do you know what derailleur is on it? Sorry that was a compound question.

Third.....Why such skinny tires? They are more for time trials and triathlons.

4 what are you using the bike for?

I know the original post said 'wheelset' however I'm looking for just the rims - not a built wheel. I'll build them myself. These will be 700c. I typically ride a 23/25 or sometimes 23/23 tire combo.

Sun M13 II are nice rims that are reasonably priced. I like them because they are not anodized

I forgot about H Plus Son, they make nice rims, I like the low profile of the TB14

The h plus sons are wide and may not be as versatile as you’d like for that range of tire widths. Open pros can rattle like one out my six does. I recently built up some Ambrosio Excellent on 32 hole 7700 hubs which turned out nice.

Preferred spoke count? Tubular an option, or are you sticking with clincher? I know the H Plus Sons have their fans, but the 470g weight seems kind of beefy (compared to the ~330-350g tubular rims I typically ride). Vintage Araya polished rims show up fairly regularly and could be a good option for your Miyata.

I know you said you would build the wheels yourself, but this looks like a nice wheelset, despite the high shipping cost:

If Japanese rims is an idea, there are Grand Bois Papillon rims, they are 19mm inside. For smaller tires and little clearance the Grand Bois Abeille is an option with 13mm inside width.

There is also the Pacenti Brevet, 19mm inside width.

Both are maybe more French style, though I don't know what Japanese style for rims would really be (French style too?)
