Yes, look it over well. Very similar to the Ironman Carbon.
The head tube can crack under heavy headset tightening.

Per a former member who would know: The fork crown on the Carbon-R has its “shoulder” below the rim, which helped to eliminate some of the noodle and gyro effect that some Ironman Carbon owners experienced.

If OK, and even sans fork, I’d pay $150. I’d swap in a better 1” threadless fork and go from there. I think the seat post is 25.4.

Not super stiff, not even stiff, but light and agile and very forgiving on a long ride.

And he just happened to have a full tri-color on hand but didn't want to finish swapping it over with broken brifters ?? Weirder things have happened I guess, but there is a story and I would want to know. Maybe the lugs are loose ?? Why is the small ring off and the big ring installed ? Still, there are many options with that purchase IMO. Not often you run across one. I bet he would take $100 too since it's in pieces and the brifters are toast. If it were a 60cm I'd be making a call. Sell off the tri-color and get the frame for free

I noticed the chainrings; made me think there was a half-baked fixie/SS plan in there somewhere. And I'd bet a nickel those brifters might just need a "tri-flow tune up".

Do these frames have a history of lugs coming loose? Is it just something to expect by this time in the frame's life? This would be my first foray into carbon and my first bonded frame, not really my cup of tea, but it is part of the IM legacy, so a little hard to resist.

And yes, a $100 offer had crossed my mind.

Oh yeah that's an '88.
The Carbon and Ironman had identical frames.The Carbon had Dura Ace while the Ironman had 600 tricolor. They both used downtube shifters.
The frame bb flexes slightly as does the aluminum forks. If you can live with that it's good to go.
I think changing the fork will lead to head tube failure...better for the aluminum forks to flex then headtube to break.
Shame the decals are missing I think that's the coolest part of that Ironman. I plan on racing mine in triathlons in 2023 season.

^^^^^ Thanks all, that's good intel. Looks like the lettering changed in '89. I actually kinda like the "mystery" effect of having the Centurion branding, but not the model. I think I'd leave it. So as a 1988, would it be spaced 126mm or 130?

Here's my Ironman (midnight rider) , set up for triathlons. 126 spacing but with a little persuasion I put Dura Ace 8 speed on it.

And 126 for the 7-speed group. Now, I could send you a complete NOS takeoff 1055 group, with wheels, for very cheap. From a ‘92 Paramount. Enabling is the name of our game.

The ‘88 Ironman Carbon lettering/ scheme had the squiggles, with the DT font expanding in thickness from “C” to “N”

The ‘89 Carbon R matched the ‘89 Ironman scheme, consistent DT font, more subtle, no squiggles. And a different fork.

After many months looking at this thread, I finally got around to restoring my Grandpa's Ironman which was sitting around in storage.

My Grandpa didn't care about the pink, or any style as seen from his original zebra handlebar wrap; he even used tan Rust-Oleum all over to fix minor scuffs. The bike was badly bent, a metalwork guru friend helped me straightened the frame with a jig het took a hammer to the bike in just the right spots which melted away large bulges in the metal from other damage. I had just planned on sanding away rust spots and touching things up with poorly matching Testors paint. My friend wanted things done right, so he brought out the sandblaster. We saved as much of the original and iconic paint as we could.

Way more work later than I imagined, the bike is just about done. I still need to track down some white hoods, and decide on a seat, but she rides, and is faaaaast.

A cold front has hit Cen-Tex, temperatures in the 90s predicted for the next two weeks.
And just in time for me to start working out again. I'll start running Tues which is my daughter's first day of 2nd grade. Man, time flies. I'll be lifting weights 2 or 3 times a week. Running 3 to 6 miles Mon-Fri. I'll ride my Ironman Sat and/or Sun. Once January comes I'll reassess. All this in preparation for the 2023 triathlon season. I'm so ready to train again. I've actually ridden the last 3 Sundays about 20 miles each ride.
