"transfer season"

...among amateur clubs... I fail to understand why people get so worked up about riders changing teams. But for as long as I've been around this sport, the annual soap opera drama occurs about this time every year.

I think the pro's have the right idea: keep all negotiations confidential until announcement day (late October? I forget the exact rule)... wear the old kit until Dec 31, then wear the new kit starting Jan 1.

No hard feelings, best wishes all around. Because, honestly, you're going to be seeing the same faces every week anyway. And after all, this is just a game here, something to do for fun.

Without the dramatics, there'd be no reasons to pummel others.
Gotta have motives to play hard, or we might as well be limp.
Friends on opposing squads, are not friends between the start and finish.

Changing teams is serious business.

On a side note, I just moved 2000 miles across country and know like 2 people that ride bikes but don't race here. No time to meet people, so unattached for a while I guess!

Not always true. If your friend has no dog in the fight he can still be your friend on the road.

"Team" is like "blood". It is not only thinker than water, it is thicker than Gu.

Last year there was a SERIOUS falling out between the new main sponsor of our team and the bike shop owner that started our team. It was over a freakin' T-shirt!. I did ask about which jersey I should wear for training and racing after that (current or last year's).

It's actually reassuring to hear that the drama is somewhat common. Back at the end of '10, a few of us went through it and got kind of discouraged.

Big Lou is still a sponsor. It was the "realtor in town that is not on your team" that butted heads with Paul S at Bikes and More. I like Tom and talk with him and ride with him and back in the day he went to Colorado Springs to train with Eddie B, raced and beat Nelson Vails, etc., but ...

... he screwed this one up.

It's as common as the leaves falling in autumn.

People who think team is thicker than Gu are part of the reason.

Personally, I think friends are friends regardless of what shirt you're wearing.

Down hear we say if you ain't a Gator, you are Gator bait.

This is a team sport and if your loyalties are not with the team, then you are a bad team mate.

I don't go out of my way to screw with people that switch teams, but team mates (even if I don't like them) come before friends when racing.

Florida State RR Championships are this weekend; age race on Saturday and Category race on Sunday, with an end-of-the-season banquet Saturday night. It'll be fun watching which guys are talking to which guys from other teams...let the maneuvering begin!

The other night I was discussing with the wife all of the rumored and potential team moves, rider switches, and the issues that come along with it...she asked why does this occur. The best answer I could some up with was, "Just a bunch of middle-aged guys wanting to create a bit of drama in their lives."

One team I know of fell apart when the shop owner started sleeping with the sponsor's ex-wife (not sure if she was soon-to-be-ex- or already-ex-). Oops.

People can always get offended if they take things personally.

I just want to train with guys that I like and lend some old-school advice to new guys. My "goals" are low, but they are worth it to me.

Agreed...prefer to ride and race with good friends than go chase the best "team deal."

I agree. I'm still good friends with those guys (at least I'd like to think I am).

Hell yes it was. That was also still the strangest Holiday Inn I've ever seen.

There are a lot of guys I look forward to seeing and hanging out with who race for rivals. I'll attack them like a rabid dog and split my last bottle with them if they need it. It's just a bike race.

my team fell apart...I saw it coming because I was the only person on the team who didnt work for the LBS/owner/sponsor (trek store). Throughout the year one by one people were quitting or getting fired, and of course drama ensued. I knew it would happen, especially since most of these guys were in their early 20's and dont know how to act...

A buddy of mine who has been racing for a very long time - has a four-digit USAC number - always says teams ruin cycling.

I know several members of my old team don't really talk to me anymore. And I know another team here fell apart when sponsorship money disappeared and the sponsors all ended up suing each other.

people who end up like that end up like that in avenues of relational existence outside of cycling as well.
