Thudbuster ST vs LT
It's a long story but we're getting back into tandem'ing. We used to use a Thudbuster ST. We've since lost that seat post so I need to pick up another. Is it worth it go with the long travel version for a heavier stoker (220-230lbs)? It's quite possible that with continued cycling that 220-230 could become 160-170 like it used to be but I'm not counting my chickens, and that won't be for a LONG time.

Had a Long one on my Bike friday Buy .. since the spring elastomer is in 2 sections you could fine tune the spring rate-elatomer density as the situation changes
Purple is the most dense , black, Blue and grey less so and you can mix them + there is the long preload bolt running through them to adjust.
the ST also has a number of different densities you have to look at the number molded in . its like a clock dial .. 3,5,7,9
long travel does require the post extension be sufficiently Long enough.. cane creek site gives the Numbers.

I you are riding on the road you will be fine with the ST. We have an ST on our tandem and it accommodates a good variety of stokers and that weight worked fine using the stiffest insert.

Half Fast
My wife (and stoker) used an LT for a while. The suspension was very comfortable, but she found herself bouncing so much that she gave it up. Our cadence is typically 80-90, so that might have had something to do with the bouncing. She weighs much less than your stoker, but as fietsbob pointed out, there are a variety of elastomers available.
