Pretty sure the OP doesn't need you to come to his defense. And please don't tell him how a FD works.

No, I see two posts where you completely contradicted yourself.

You're on my ignore list at this point, so enjoy the last word.

@njkayaker in post #20actually gave the most complete explanation of the working of the front derailleur. I did some experimental shifts and i cannot see exactly the mechanism which lifts the chain, so I have to believe both njkayaker and smd4 might be correct. Seems reasonable.

As for all the rest ... once people start getting snotty, I need to leave. I haven't been banned in quite a while, so maybe it is time .... but maybe not.

Thanks, all.

Huge difference between njkayaker and the other guy--njk's post is specific, nuanced and helpful. He also notes that FD can impart vertical movement of the chain and that it's more important that they do that as the gap between rings gets bigger. OP took from that to look at smaller gaps between the rings which might actually work out for him.

That's a first-rate post from njk, it's the kind of thing
that bf should be all about.

OP's trying something novel. He may fall on his face, he might make a superfast bike, he might do something in between. It probably will take some trial and error. I want to know how it turns out and I don't want people driving him out with snottiness.

Which has been pointed out as incorrect, but apparently a common misconception.

The only reason for the vertical movement, and what makes those derailleurs shift better, is it keeps the cage very close to both rings. It’s the equivalent of a slant parallelogram in the rear. It imparts ZERO vertical impetus on the chain.
