If you have the same color of your old tape you can cut a piece out of that. It will be mostly covered anyway.

Rarely a problem for me running 40cm wide bars, but I have run across a few no-name tapes that fall short (pun intended) even without cutting a few inches off.

I actually use leftover or used tape to add padding to the tops or a bump in the drops for a more ergo fit.
