My luck finally ran out.. first flat today.

Firm but gentle
I also can't stand that burdensome spare tube
That's why I always have a follow vehicle with a spare bike. The vehicle is staffed by Hawaiian Tropic bikini models.

I race and carry a bag on one bike but many people don't. The majority of fast riders I see don't and I travel a lot and see rides all over the place.
Part is asthetics - people spend a lot and care about looks and a bag hanging under the saddle detracts from that. Another is getting a bag that fits well. Hhnngg1 already mentioned the problem with aero seat posts. I have one and I can't get the strap to fit snug. Another is most bags stick out past the end of narrow saddles. Finally co2 and other things in the bag make noise. It's real easy o put things in a bag and stick it in my jersey pocket.

Just a week ago I went past 4000 miles without a flat and then had one. Radial wire puncture. I carry two spare tubes, a patch kit, three CO2 cartridges, tire levers, a couple allen wrenches, a small first aid kit all in a seatbag plus a frame mounted pump.

I dont use a saddle bag. but my minipump, tire levers, spare tube multitool etc. easily fit into my jersey pockets. I dont even notice they are there. Really no need to ruin your ride just for a flat. Take the appropriate stuff with you and you will be on your way in a matter of minutes.

I am always amazed when a cyclist standing by the side of the road responds "No." to the standard "Got everything you need?" I've had three in the past seven days.
This is why I carry patches and a hand pump in addition to levers, a tube and a CO2 chuck.
You guys are trying my patience. Please don't ride further than you are willing to walk without flat tools. (At least I was fortunate enough to encounter cuties two out of three times this week - except that I was with my wife for one of them and she gave me some good natured grief about helping cyclists in distress...)

Naah, your luck runs out when smashed by a car. A flat? Just part of cycling.

About 10 miles from home... called the fiancé and luckily had her come pick me up. I've been testing my luck for the last few months. I don't really want to carry an under saddle bag... do any of you guys just carry c02+tube in your jerseys??
Also, there is a pin hole puncture in my tire... should I worry about patching that up once i replace the tube or does that even matter? I suppose small debris etc could sneak into there.

Idiotic quote of the day. Get a bag, fill it with the stuff you need, practice replacing the tube a few times so you don't look like a complete moron out there and learn to be self sufficient.

two tubes, three co2s, super patches and a mini pump.

out walking the earth
I have it all (except the pump) duct taped together in a neat little package. That goes in my left jersey pocket. The mini pump goes in the center pocket.

Why are you guys crying over a flat tire? It happens, I rather cry when I hear people never getting a flat. Like my girl friend, she hasn't had a flat since she got her bike 8 years ago, and she does ride it. *cries*

"luck runs out" is a phrase reserved for a crash involving injury or bicycle damage. flats come with the territory.

Something else to consider. In my area, CAA (AAA for Canada), does supports their members when on their bikes too. I never thought I would have had to use them, but I did 2 years ago. I had a tire split in a 5 cm long cut when I ran over a hunk of metal. I had a spare tube, but the gash in the tire was too big, so I needed a pickup. I was 47km away from home so I called CAA. Tow truck driver came, 45 minutes later and we tied the bike to back and I got a ride home. I have CAA Plus, so I'm covered for 3 tow calls per year with a max tow distance of 200km each time.
