105 seems like an odd group choice. Wonder home many of these frames are in the wild.

I have the non "budget" iteration of the frameset (also in SLX) and although the workmanship/straightness is the best that I have ever seen in lugged steel, it is also the least lively and "dead" frameset that I have encountered.

Left chainstay has the curve and all.

Hah, yeah, that's kind of my question, too. That's a sweet looking paint job. Kind of looks like a fishing lure, but I've been on a fishing kick lately, so could just be me.

Sad to hear it feels "dead" though. I've always kind of wanted a Serotta.

Eidt: Oh, and thanks for making me look up Davis Phinney. I started reading the article and thought, "Gee, wonder what he's up to these days?" Now I see that he has Parkinson's disease, and a Foundation for it. Kind of a downer, but great to see that he's tackling it.

That era's 105 was just an amazingly well dialed in group. I just installed one and although the paint / powder coat / whatever finish isn't as pretty as the higher, anodized and polished groups I believe it works as well as anything with indexed DT shifters ever did. The brakes are excellent.

Great budget choice until brifters became mandatory on the market.

Keeping the price down to $1200 bucks for a complete bike -- A frameset alone in those days wouldve cost almost that much

It has a little help (dead feel) with the very stiff wheelset, but it's not a bad "dead", rather smooth but without any liveliness. It feels like my track bike in that regard.

I guess I'm relegated to riding on the back seat of a Fiat.

Yeah - I missed that it was a price-point bike. And yeah, those 105 brakes are good. I have them on my Battaglin and like them a lot.

Nice. Great build, I really like how you have it geared. Did you add the long cage to that DA derailleur, or is that original?

Original and pretty rare Dura-Ace medium cage. I am running a semi-compact Sugino crank setup.

Bought this about 10 years ago from Big Bossman, if my memory is correct it was an '87.
Gorgeous bike but was never able to get really comfortable on it despite trying several different groups, saddles, bars, stems, etc.
Could probably do a much better job of fitting it today, we've all learned so much over the past decade.
