On Fathers Day, I was riding my mtn bike to the desert preserve near my house to do some trail riding, and I managed to crash pretty hard on the way. Well, I snapped my head sideways when I hit the ground and cracked my helmet in 4 places, not to mention the gravel dings that could've been my head instead. I walked away with some road rash, a very sore shoulder, and probably another concussion.

Anyway, when I started o look at new helmets, I found out that my wife is having absolutely no issues anymore with how much I want to spend on a helmet.

I guess that's turning lemons into lemonade.

BTW, the bike is fine, I broke it's fall.

Go for more coverage in the back, spending big bucks is not needed, fit is everything.
3/4 helmets are what I moved Into.

My $95 Bontrager Rally fits my head real well, the sun visor Is nice and having a bit more of the back side of my head protected makes me feel better.
The Lithos, a bit more weight has a bit more comfort for $150 but Mine Is so light I never feel it, saw no need to spend the extra Fity and have an extra 100 grams up there....

Of course If you gotta be branded and wear whats all over the magazines you can pay north of $250 I think for a POC, The one I tried on felt no better..

I invested in a MIPS helmet earlier this year- it's supposed to help with rotation-related concussion effects. But sadly, the helmet (GIRO Savant MIPS) broke less than 2 months later - the tightening wheel to the temple strap snapped off. So I can't really recommend it. It seemed like a good thought, but now I'm back using my old helmet, contemplating what to do next...

Be glad that you walked away with only minor injuries; there's a random element there. I'm encouraging to get whatever helmet you want, if that helps any.

Went down on my mountain bike a few years ago. An inexpensive Bell helmet probably saved me from a concussion (and possibly saved my life). I still occasionally see a rider without a helmet and just shake my head. If you are serious about riding, wear a helmet -- every time!

A buddy and I (both over 70 years old) were resting while riding the trails in a local park last year when a guy in his early twenties came by and stopped for a moment. He wasn't wearing a helmet. My buddy asked him if he knew what people called a guy who didn't wear a helmet. The guy smiled and my buddy said "An organ donor." The fellow said "I don't need to wear a helmet, I know how to fall."

Regardless OP Wileyrat likes his helmet and wants a new one. I say after going through that fall he rates all of the bells and whistles and we should be supportive, not making fun of some random 20-something.

I thought that was what people called unathletic old men who ride bikes (or drive cars) without doing the recommended core training, gymnastics, weight work, weight loss, hearing checks and vision exams.

Sorry to others for being impolite, but the helmet nazi crap needs to be confined to the helmet thread in A&S.

I was wearing my Giro Venti when I went down, and since I was able to sit down and enjoy my Fathers Day dinner that afternoon, it did it's job very well. I've had issues with it's airflow, and I retired it as my main road helmet in favor of a Garneau Quartz II, which has airflow similar to a leaf blower, and I'm looking at another Garneau for the same reason.

I cracked my Costco Bell a couple of years ago in a nasty wreck. Many months later I was going through my Runmeter ride data & graph and noticed there was a gap of about 20 seconds where I was stopped and not moving. After the crackup I suspected I'd had a concussion as I came to gasping for breath. The ride data confirmed my suspicion that'd I'd actually simultaneously knocked myself out and knocked the wind out of me when my right elbow jammed into my rib cage. I likely lay there for as long as it took for that involuntary breathing to try to take a breath, thus jar me to consciousness. As my head hit asphalt, probably saved me a nasty head wound and worse concussion. Never wore a helmet in the early/mid 70's...always as an adult.

Wileyrat....apropos of pretty much nothing, I began my adult cycling "career" in Tucson 35 years ago. Put in a fair number of miles around there...good memories. No helmet back then, none of us wore them. Now in my 70's and with much less to lose I'll no longer sit a bike without one.

Ha! That's what I call motorcyclists with no helmets! Been down twice, once with a helmet and once way back when they pretty much didn't exist (yeah I'm old). Both times did a lot of damage, road rash, torn bicep, cracked ribs, broken teeth when my mouth slammed shut on impact, but I've never hit my head, thank god, or the state highway dept. would be really P.O.ed. with me.

Once you make the decision to get a helmet the "get a helmet" debate is closed. The only other thing that matters is Fit, weight, airflow and style. Add rank to any of the four as you like. The only problem I have with expensive helmets for MTBs is we, or at least I, fall more on a MTB and helmets aren't designed for multiple impacts. So an endo, flying W or simple hard get off and you are looking for a new helmet. My ultra light, insert expensive because light equals expensive, is used almost exclusively with my road bikes. My normal helmet, insert much better price for the same air flow and 100 grams more weight, is used for MTBing.

My riding days go back to the leather 'hairnet' helmets back in the '70s in Tucson. Yup, still wear a helmet at age 82.

This is my helmet after a fall last year. It resulted in me waking up in an ambulance on my way to hospital and concussion, but I suspect that that was preferable to my bare skull hitting the hard ground.

That's my problem! I'm still learning how to fall and I'm getting more practice than I'd like. Maybe that young fellow and I could learn some things from one another.

Besides, Mrs. Grouch grouches at me if I ride up to the hardware store without a helmet.
