My lumber jack shirt in it's natural environment (Gunflint Trail near the Minnesota-Canada boarder). I think this was an REI brand ... not sure ... but the cool thing is that it's a bike focused shirt with dump pockets in the rear and you can't tell in this pic, but the pattern includes a reflective stripe.

In North Dakota at the end of CANDISC in 2006. The jersey is one iteration from a recreational team sponsored by a former employer.

A new and improved version of the team jersey riding Chief Mountain Highway after crossing the border from Alberta into Montana on the way to Glacier National Park in 2009.

Now that we've *finally* have some decent weather, I got in a nice ride with my new favorite kit. There should be enough material to trigger the trolls

This one, because of 2 reasons, 1. It was a gift from my mom, and 2, it’s from my old, first, real bike shop from my childhood; Gus’s Bike Shop, North Hampton, NH.

I was a 13yr old kid with a paper route I did on my old Schwin and got a flat not far from the shop, so I walked my bike there hoping to get a new tube, and Gus, a 60 something retired bike racer from Belgium, fixed it for me, then he wouldn’t take any money for it! I had the money, I pushed a $5 bill at him, (1972) but he wouldn’t take it. He said not to worry, just tell my friends about his new bike shop.

Well I told everyone at school about the new bike shop, and how great this guy Gus was, Gus and his wife were the only ones in the shop, and I would drop in on them often as the shop was pretty much on my paper route. They were great to talk to, funny accents, warm and generous.

10 years later (1982ish) Gus and his wife retired again, and sold the shop to John Bocco, and a few years after that at age 25, I went back to buy a real road bike, a Bianchi Limited. John wouldn’t let me take it home without a helmet.

Now I had been riding a bike daily since age 9, never had a helmet and at that time even the guys in the TDF didn’t wear helmets, so I figured I didn’t need one either, but John was insistent and refused to sell me the bike unless I got the helmet too. So I bought one. Glad I did as a week later a car pulled out in front of me and I bounced my head off his driver side window!

John invited me to come ride with his bike shop guys after work at 5pm and weekend mornings, that’s when I really learned how to ride a pace line.

Unfortunately about 10 years ago John died of brain cancer, he’d already sold the shop and the shop is still there but I moved to Florida 25 years ago so I haven’t been to the shop in years, but I love this jersey because it brings back a lot of great memories of riding with Big John and his bike shop boys, and of Gus fixing my flat for free!

Oh, and I still ride that 1985 Bianchi once in a while:

this unit gets the call most often. really want another even tho it is still holding up. I could only find a pre-owned long sleeve unit on poshmark

this old golf shirt isn't bad, I should look for it, but it is a little heavier, so not good for the really hot days 90+F

this Walmart sports fan shirt is pretty comfy because of it's open weave. rarely bike w/o a helmet, except for a beach bike-&-hike like this day
