Where To Leave Lever?

Ok bike is a fat bike. Trek Farley.
On rear wheel I have those newer skewer type of things for the wheel. Not the older quick release
Where you lock the lever and you have to put the whole skewer in and out which holds the wheel.
Last ride. The skewer came loose.
I think i may had hit a rock or branch and it turned the lever
What is the safe position to leave the lever at? and to lock
should i make sure the lever is always in the up position?

this is similar to what I am referring to

Up. Along the upper chainstay or just behind it if it folds "deeper" (more inwards than the chainstay allows.

Edit: Or you could place the lever on the right side, pointing down or slightly back from that, which, if you hit something, will result in the lever being turned to make things tighter.
