The Dahon Dash, Smooth Hound, Silvertip, etc. Foto Homage thread...

As the title reads, this thread is dedicated to images of forum member Dahon Dash, Silvertip, Bullhead, Smooth Hound, Hammerhead, etc. folding bikes or so-called Dahon 'Shark' bikes with classic diamond geometry. I'll get the ball rolling with my own Dash...

No longer in my possession, used to own this beauty, build it myself.
First generation (or second?) separable (non-folding) frame Dahon Smooth Hound.
Now I am feeling a bit of regret selling this fine bike... d'oh!

I was searching for one a while back, but I couldn't find one in my frame size. They've been harder to acquire here in the USA. I have a Lombardo Power2000 instead,... Non-folder, but good performer.

I've never seen a lock-jaw based Dahon over here. They seem to sell in Asia, though.

It's too bad the rear wheel doesn't move around the bottom bracket to end below the down tube and make the bike smaller.

BTW, can the handlebar be moved 90° so the bike is easier to carry when folded?

Availability in US?

Hello -- Does anyone know where I could buy (new or used) a Dahon with the Lockjaw system? I am in Chicago, so would prefer to find one here that I could try out. I am interested in pretty much any Dahon Lockjaw model with 20" wheels -- Dash, Smooth Hound, Bullhead, Altena, Hammerhead, Silvertip, etc. etc. Just looking for a good portable commuter bike. (I am 5'11" with 32" inseam.)
Thanks,
j

Apparently, it's only available for the Asian market?

Here's an FB page from the Philippines:

Nice Silvertip.
I recall the stock slicks felt fast but I tried riding in grass and sand with them and it was naturally exciting in an annoying way.
I see you upgraded to something more comfortable.

That Escape dimension is weird considering the frame can fold.
Wheelbase or folded frame length would have made more sense.

Where did this geometry come from, it doesn't match my silvertip at all my head tub angle is more like 72.5° or 73° and to my knowledge they only offered 2 sizes L and M

this is geometry of Bruno minivelo. i place it as example of good geometry description, that Dahon can't do(
if somebody can do a table like this for Dahon - that would be great, maybe without angles.

Just bought a 2nd hand Dash P18. When folded the crank arm gouged a deep scratch in the frame. Is this common?

this happened to mine too. Because I was not careful with crankarm positioning when folding. you gotta watch that.

My Smooth Hound converted to Dash P16!!

Hi All,

Glad to have found this forum. Some of your bikes are mouth watering! I love the styling of the Dash P18 and the ride feel. To date I have owned a Raleigh Twenty, Dahon MU Uno, Brompton M6L, a Dahon Speed TR and now I have my latest Dahon again! I had been looking for one for a long time and now I finally have one! Well, I bought it used and it is a Smooth Hound 16 speed. I hated the handlebars, shifters and brake levers so upgraded (or some would say downgraded) to a flatbar from a Giant Bowery single speed, new Shimano Claris 16sp gear shifters and brake levers, and got new brake and shifter cables as well as some Ergon grips. I also put on my fav Prologo saddle. Cables are a bit too long at the moment and I'll have to sort that out sometime. So essentially I have created a Dash P16!!
Let me know what you all think....

Tom

Welcome to the family. Love the dark blue tone. Yeah, that cabling needs a bit of attention. Have you considered a Brown or Honey leather saddle with matching grips, or a silver handlebar?

If, if, if you are looking to trim weight, you could remove the magnetix, the foot, and look to a Hollowtech crankset.

Thanks!

Yeah I wasn't a fan of the Brooks brown saddle that come with it, or the moustache handlebars. I've put the saddle on my single speed. I've got a Black Brooks on my Thorn and was thinking of putting that onto the Dahon, but I'm going for a Dash look and prefer the Prologo. I've actually ordered a new Biologic post pump too as the current one is broken.

I was looking around for videos on the web of anyone who had packed the bike and travelled. Couldn't find much so am going to document my own packing/travel video and will upload. Will be leaving in a couple of days time and the bike will be heading with me to Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane over a week and a half. Got an old model Desley hard case to pack it all into so I'll see how it goes. The bag weighs 7kg and the bike currently weighs 11.2kg, so I am under the 23kg max limit for checked in luggage. Will be using my carry on luggage for my clothes. I should be able to fit my helmet, bottle, couple of tools, spare tube etc. into the big bag also.

When you pack it, beware a crankarm turning in transit and gauging the downtube when folded. I now restrain the crankarms so they cannot turn.
