Shimano WH-R561 Silence

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano WH-R561 Silence

I went riding with a friend today, and I noticed that his rear hub is completely silent when coasting. No pawl/ratchet sound at all. It's a Shimano WH-R561. What gives? Is it some other technology, or does Shimano just make hubs that are so quiet that they can't be heard?

Shimano hubs are known to be on the quiet side of the spectrum.

It was probably in depeche mode. Just enjoy the silence.

Some free hubs are noisy others are quiet. Of course there are different free hub designs and lubes prefered by the manufacturer that influence this.

If you hang around long enough, you'll read posts from people annoyed with their quiet free hubs and other posts from people annoyed with their noisy free hubs.

They made a hub called "Scylence" for a short time but it didn't work as intended for long so they stopped using that name. Shimano has made quiet hubs for years, though. I have a 6600 hub which is almost silent.
Some people want noisy hubs.

I looked in eBay and found some Shimano WH-R561 wheels, if your friend would like to stock up on silent hubs. I personally don't mind if my hubs were silent or loud

I had their Silent Clutch hub before and recall thinking it wasn't very silent.

Shimano and Campagnolo make some of the quieter hubs on the market, in my experience. At least my Campy Zondas are, no idea about Boras or higher end stuff. They're not completely silent, per se, but definitely quiet enough that one can have a conversation while cruising. A bit harder with DT Swiss or Chris King hubs, among others.

I've heard that one can pack loud hubs with heavier grease to quiet them down somewhat, at the risk of slower engagement. Not sure what one can do with a very quiet hub - baseball cards in the spokes, maybe.
