Garmin Edge Explore 2 (based on 1040)

Sounds like an update to the previous Explore model, not surprisingly. You get maps but not power or workouts. This has the new UI from the 1040 which is reported to be easier and have less learning curve.

The mount that allows you to recharge it in situ looks new as well. That could be useful for long hauls. The thing looks as big as a 1040.

It also is touted as being e-bike compatible, but I can't seem to find out what the compatibility criteria are. (Wife has an e-bike now.)

Edit:

compatible with Shimano Steps or ANT+® technology,

Slightly improved battery life, up to 16 hrs. from 12 on the older Explore. A buddy has the older version, its about the same size as my 1030.

This controls smart trainers and works with power meters after all.

At $300 this looks like a better buy than the 1030+ was at $450?

I think it's missing some types of power reporting (that I suppose the 1030+ and older models support).

You mean it takes more than typing "e-bike compatible" in a web page?

My wife has an e-bike (Bosch-motor based). It is remarkably incompatible with everything (supposedly using a Garmin will mess up its own sensors), and has been a source of frustration. It looks like all this does is display battery content and projected distance to empty, and other stuff already displayed on the e-bike head unit.

I use garmins on my bosch bikes with no issues of course they don't connect thats why I use them to record my rides to strava back when I only had the purion.Hoping the new stuff from bosch will connect better.

Her Bosch head unit displays a warning that a Garmin might interfere (I assume if it hogs the ANT+ sensor connections).

I cannot think of anything a Garmin cycling computer could do to mess up an e-bike. It can transmit data vis BlueTooth and WiFi but if thats whats causing problems with the E-bike, you've got bigger problems as a lot of things like cell phones do that as well. The Garmin, when not trying to communicate with another device is only listening to satellite signals.

I think what Bosch has in mind is that if you add the cadence, speed etc. ANT+ sensors to the Garmin, they might not be available to the Bosch unit. I don't know if this is true (i.e., that a Garmin would "hog" the device connection), having never tried it, but I think that is what the Bosch head unit is warning against. Ideally, it would be nice if the user could use both simultaneously.

DCRAINMAKER did a review

I really like it except that it doesn’t have DI2 integration. Still going to think about it

No phone involved. It has ANT+ sensors and they are wireless.

This is going OT.

ANT+ is many to many but BT is one to one. Or at least has historically been. I agree with @Steve B. that it shouldn't be an issue. I've seen as it of cases where computers do things people weren't expecting. And I've also seen overly cautious people trying to avoid having to support more than they're capable of.

It is this: https://www.cannondale.com/en-us/bik.../synapse-neo-1

You are right that the speed/cadence is wired. There is some object that says "Cannondale" [correction] on the front spokes near the hub that isn't.

I'm only going by the warning that popped up on the controller. Nothing good or bad actually happened. Somehow the Bosch controller "knows" the Garmin is present, which is creepy enough.

Sorry, I mis-typed. It should say "Cannondale" for the branding on the front wheel. The website calls it the "Cannondale wheel sensor" and now that I think of it, it MUST be Bluetooth, because it is what communicates (wirelessly) to the Cannondale app on her phone. In fact, you can spin the front wheel to activate it. It transfers all the info from the ride (except it has no GPS) to the phone app. So why the head unit *****es about the Garmin's presence is beyond me.
