What did the previous 38mm tire get relabeled as? Or did they stop selling tires that size?
Sizes skip from 38mm to 42mm. Was the previous 38mm really big enough to warrant being labeled 42mm? I got a new 38mm to replace an old one, and it seems quite a bit smaller. I'm annoyed with myself for buying it even though it will probably work.

GKs come in 38mm and 43mm sizes in addition to many other sizes.
I am not aware of a 42mm size.

Due to the growing popularity of wide tubeless rims, the tires are wider on these. I read somewhere Panaracer relabeled the 35 or 38 into 40 if memory serves me correctly. Try finding the article if you can.

I found some forum posts. I probably should have gotten the 43, which I think used to be labeled 40mm

I'm not sure what I would find on their website, AFAIK talk of the re-labeling was all word of mouth and I was hoping someone remembered what happened.
People say they are still not quite labeled up to size, but now they are only off by 1mm instead of more. I am using mtb rims, so I guess that makes them even wider.

I got the fanciest version, which is almost a slick in the center. So I figure it won't last quite as long as the one I had before, which was the version with small knobs everywhere.

Gravel King SS Plus comes in (700 X) 28, 32, 35, 38, 43, and 48mm.
Gravel King EXT Plus comes in (700 X) 33, 35, and 38mm.
Gravel King AC comes in (700 X) 33 and 35mm.
Gravel King SK Knobby comes in (700 X) 28, 32, 35, 43, and 50mm.
Gravel King Slick comes in (700 X) 26, 28, 32, 35, and 38mm.

I don't think any of these sizes are new or relabeled.

Word is they relabeled the whole line early on. So some of the newer versions never got relabeled because they did a better job of putting the true size on them in the first place.

It's possible the tire I purchased in 2014(?) as a 38 is the same size that they now label as 43.

How to the slicks hold up on mostly asphalt conditions ?
I'm trying to decide between the slicks and the SS, for mostly road riding.

I use 32mm GK Slick for my main road bike- used that model for 2 seasons now(on 2nd pair) and love the tire. I dont think about it in dry or wet conditions, it has held up well in terms of punctures, the cost is great, and it rolls plenty fast(it doesn't have a noticeably slow feel). Me not thinking about a tire is about the best thing I can say about tires.

My gravel bike has 43mm GK SS tires and while I just bought another pair to install(clearly like them), they are slower than the slicks. Pretty obvious since the SS is a more robust tread. For paved riding, a slick is plenty reliable for everything I do.

I’ve run both slicks & SS. The SS edges give more confidence on off-camber trails, sketchy spots, wet turns, etc.. Haven’t tried the plus version but found the standard SS was plenty durable. I felt near zero difference between them and the slicks. BRR tested them and found only 2-3 watts difference. The SS had far better puncture protection. I liked them so much that I just bought my second set and we also put a set on my wife’s bike too.

I like the slicks (the originals, whatever they call them now), but they wear out pretty quickly for me. I used 700c x 32mm on my road bike and they normally are worn out this time of year even though they only have less than 1500 miles on them. I rarely ride them on gravel. In normal times I would have switched to some other tire, looking at continental GP 5k in tubeless

Mystery solved on the original question. I had remembered that I run 38mm tires, but they are actually 40mm. So I should have bought a 43mm tire, because that's the same size as what I had.
