Jury-rig: Attaching Frame pump via Seat Stay. Am I going to die?

A bit melodramatic, but I just wanted to get a second opinion on my jury rig setup. Using a tubus p-clip and some velcro, I've attached my frame pump along the seatstay. Does it look okay? It feel very solid. I've tugged up on the clamp and it won't budge, and tugging on the frame pump doesn't move it either. Thoughts? Thank you.

The only thing I don't like about the setup is how I used some rubber rim tape wrapped around the seatstay as a shim for the tubus pclip. Metal or wood would be better, but I don't have the supplies or the tools to make a bespoke shim that's ~3mm thick.

Rubber better than wood or metal. A piece of old inner tube over the pump head will make it more likely to work when you need it.

Does your heel hit the pump? I think it looks like it is far enough back, but worth checking.

By putting the pump in front of the stay, if it bumps the tire, it will just bounce away rather than getting sucked into something really bad...

Anyway, I think you'll be OK.

Should be fine.

Cost me a few pumps to decide the top tube wasn't a great place to mount a pump. I'd have to take the pump off to get the bike on a car rack, and kept driving off with the pump on the trunk or straddling the rack. So far I've had one problem in a dozen years with the seatstay mounted pump, when the zip tie on my mount stretched (pump made it home in a jersey pocket).

Looks like a catastrophe waiting to happen to me in my opinion. Frame pumps, including Zefal, Silca, etc, have been known to pop off the frame without warning on a hard bump. Where you mounted yours it looks like it would go right into the spokes.

BTW, the term is "Jerry Rigged", not Jury Rigged.

I wouldn't put it on the stay. You'll have less time to notice anything bad going on before it's too late. If you can't put it inside the main triangle or on top of the top tube, then consider the other solutions for airing up a tire or tube.

It's amusing to me when people say they sweat like a pig when really they mean they sweat like a horse. Pigs don't sweat! Horses sweat profusely when worked.

The velco strap is a good idea to back up your mount. I have mounted my pump from the drop-out to the seat tube without a problem.

why? won't it fit under the top tube or using the pump holder you have on the seat tube. I don't like look...my problem not yours

but you will surely die if you don't trim the excess brake cable

I'd probably add a second velcro strap near the QR just to be safe and make sure it doesn't jump from that end, and call it good.

YES - - - - YOU are going to die, as are we all!

Now the timing and cause seem to be what is really in question here !
And that pump mount might help you along in the process.

+1. I don't see having it on the seat stay as a big problem but mounting it on the seat tube with the chrome holder that's already there or moving the holder to the top tube would be much more practical and easier to take on and off when you need the pump. Also put some protective tape on your frame where the pumps two plastic "wings" come in contact with it or they will wear through the paint.

Voile straps will give a tighter grip than non-stretchy velcro straps.

But pig iron, evidently, does sweat.

Thank you all for your advice! To try to answer the questions:

Why not under the top tube or along the seat tube? I like being able to lift and carry my bike from the top tube, annoying having the frame pump there. As for along the seat tube, I would put it there but I want to carry two water bottles.

It is far enough behind my feet to avoid being bumped.

Brake cable: Awaiting trimming once I decide upon stem height/length and brake levers.

I do like both ideas of adding some tape where the head of the pump meets the frame to prevent damage, as well as adding another strap to help hold the pump steady. Another thanks for the voile strap recommendation!

I'll let you all know if/when I perish, after the response of half "yes" and half "no" I feel somewhat confident about trying it out with the 2nd strap.

Jamming a pump into the seat stay used be a pretty common way of carrying a pump. Google "pump in seatstay" and click images for multiple examples.
Another vote for "Jury-rigged"

Jury Rigged

Thanks for sending me to the dictionary for “Jury Rigged”. Jury Rigged is the oldest of the terms. I had never
heard of “Jerry Rigged” before. Being from the Chicago area, “Jury Rigged” just seemed to make sense..Bill

Beware the fate of Mr. Pither! (first occurrence at 00:44)
I have my pump on the non-drive side of the seat tube where it just fits.

Topeak "Road Morph" attached to seat tube.

Interesting. Been considering moving my pump somewhere other than my top tube since I end up doing hike-a-bikes at times where I ride. I use these Jaand straps: https://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FPT

Just looking though at the way you've got that pump wedged in there, makes me wonder, that corner of the triangle is gonna flex a little, no? Won't that put pressure on the clip that the pump is braced against on top? I would think that would over time loosen up as a result.

It might, I should definitely keep an eye on the setup for a variety of reasons. I'm hoping it will be alright, the tubus p-clip is pretty strongly tightened on there. Plus there's the eyelet that it's braced up against.

I should mention that the only reason I'm bothering with this is because I'm having sticker shock at the moment after purchasing a a new bike and am trying to keep costs down. I would much rather just buy a Road Morph G and be done with it. But I'm trying to make do and am hoping it won't bite me in the ass!

Actually, on second thought, the pump would compress as the frame flexed--I didn't think of that! So, NVM!

Man, all these years I thought it was "Gerry rigged" and started as a slur against the Germans during one of the world wars. Never heard of jury rigged. This forum is an education in more ways than one!
