Swap freehub from old hub to 10+ speed
Heya,
I inherited a rather fetching golden spoked wheelset with "edco competition - swiss made" rear hubs. 130 mm width.
I'd love to swap the hub to a contemproary 10+ speed version if possible, so I can use the wheelset for my other bikes. Can this be done, or is this futile?

There are 11 speed cassettes that fit a standard 8-10 HG freehub body.
Ultegra CS-HG800 11-34 is one along with a bunch of MTB cassettes. All of them have big cogs that overhang the freehub body toward the wheel centerline. 11 speed cassettes with big cogs smaller than maybe 32t can’t do this and so they require a wider freehub body (“11 speed road”). Note there is no “11 speed mountain” HG freehub for exactly this reason.

I have an Edco hub like yours with a Shimano/HG freehub body. I think they were also made with 8 speed Campagnolo freehubs.

That’s not a Campy cassette, it looks like an 8 speed Shimano cassette with a 7 speed Uniglide small cog. The Uniglide small cog threads on the outside of the freehub body instead of inside like a normal lock ring.
If you take it off you should be able to use the cassette you want. Does the freehub have threads for a lock ring?

Oh, fair play - i didnt know. I just assumed, since the bike it came from had all campy parts, this would've been one too. I unfortunately have no tool to remove the cassette to check if the hub is threaded. But if it were, could i swap it to a different freehub?

@Positron400 - All you need are two chain whips. You could make them if you have extra chain laying around and a flat steel piece.

Not so fast….
Two chain whips will indeed remove that cassette, but I’m not sure you can then use “whatever cassette you want.”
You will need to see if there are internal threads on the freehub, and if the freehub is long enough to accept an 8/9/10 cassette, or the HG-C800.
Not a guarantee. You may still need to swap the freehub, but that is not difficult.
Things are looking up, though, once you get that cassette off, the process will be easier to figure out.

Also, I've only been able to count 7 sprockets (not 8). Is the OP certain the hub is actually spaced at 130mm and not 126mm? Or did you only measure the dropout spacing?

Sorry for the bad resolution - I only have one chainwhip atm (and not the tools to manufacture a 2nd one). Either way - thanks for letting me know how what type of cassette this was and how to remove it.
I did also double check, and yes, the hub is indeed 130 mm and there are 8 sprockets (counted them 3x )
Yea, that was my intial question - seems doable, thanks!

There are some bold, yet wildly incorrect pronouncements being thrown around here.
OP has repeatedly stated that his cassette has 8 cogs. Not 7. He does not have a 7 speed Shimano Uniglide freehub.
Below are pictures of my Edco hub. It has an 8 speed HG freehub with threads on the outside for a UG small cog.
The last picture shows my Edco hub next to a bare Shimano 7 speed freehub (Acera IIRC). Note that the just the splined portion on the Edco freehub is longer than the entire 7 speed unit.
OP does not need to swap anything, he just needs to take off his UG lock ring and get a new cassette.

What was mentioned is that the smallest sprocket is a Shimano 7 speed Uniglide. It is clearly marked as such. Several of us also mentioned that it was difficult to count the sprockets because the focus was poor. For this reason, we asked for the OP to clarify and confirm that it has 8 sprockets and had 130mm spacing, which was kindly provided.
The picture of your hub and freehub body is very helpful. If a picture was provided of the OP's freehub body (with no cassette), we could have provided more accurate guidance.
Technically your freehub is a Uniglide/Hyperglide hybrid. Shimano also made these (I have had a couple of 105 rear hubs in this configuration). The good news is that 9 and 10 speed Hyperglide cassettes will fit on these freehubs.
IMO, I don't believe anyone was being "bold," with "wildly incorrect pronouncements."

The lock ring cog is marked 7s because they don't make 8s UG cassettes (except for Dura Ace which has a smaller small cog). Looks like somebody kluged together an 8 speed cluster by using a small cog from a 7s cluster.

Apologies again, for the poor picture quality, but seems like i got lucky with the hub, and wont need to switch it out (granted I get the UG cassette off at some point)
To reiterate:
- it is an 8 speed cassette
- the hub width is 130 mm
- the last sprocket is weirdly marked with "7S"
Thanks everyone and esp C9H13N for providing pictures of the freehub w/o a cassette (Also, I see what you did there with your username - Chemist here)
