you can catch a bus in downtown oakland back over to the city all night long, right on 14th & broadway with is downtown

i used 2am in the example, but you can put in anytime you need and see what time the next bus arrives...

They will start a pilot program this year for allowing bikes at all times. They will modify some cars to have space for bikes. I read this in an SFBC bulletin.

i thought they had already changed that? according to most of the searching i have done on the bart website as far as me bringing my bike on bart to and from work (certainly during commute time, around 7-7:30am and 5-5:30pm) the only rule is that it can't be on the first car. i think they still have that rule about making bikes get off at emb... i never understood that! i guess it's moot since i try and take bart as little as possible, it's a disgusting vile train and not worth the mention.

No, it's still in effect. If you look at any time schedule, some regions of it are printed with a gray background. Those are the times bikes are not allowed on BART. But the gray areas vary by station. I work in the East Bay, and on my way home in the evening, no station east of SF is ever gray, but the SF stations starting with Embarcadero are. This means that at rush hour, I can take my bike over the Bay to Embarc, but there I would have to get off. Which I don't do btw... but I work at off hours, so it's rarely a problem for me anyway.

I actually like BART a lot, the only problem is that the trains are not frequent enough and they don't have a fine enough network of lines -- I'm spoiled by what I grew up with in Europe. I also look forward for the more bike friendly cars. It's also not really cheap (I pay $6 for a round trip each day!), but it's still plenty cheap in comparison to operating a car.

huh, maybe its because i never travel east of sf. when i do the schedule online thing to look up if i can bring my bike on the bart to/from work on certain days now and then, it always shows that i can (but on the printed schedules i know what you mean about it being grey).

bart is good, cheap and effective; for the most part. i have personal issues with the people that run it, no soap box needed! i'd look silly pointing fingers while still shelling out my $7.30 every other friday to go to and from millbrae (that does seem a bit high to me... but still cheaper than a car and lazier than a 20 mile ride)

I have to take Golden Gate transit buses everyday, 8 bucks round trip. Sucks ass. One more week till I move into SF properly, I already work here and spend all my time here.

GG Transit as in crossing the bridge? man, that must be fun every morning/evening. (no sarcasm intended, i whole-heartedly mean that!) $8 aint bad, considering it costs $5 to cross the bridge northernly, and at least $5 in gas round trip from here to there and back. plus aren't those busses pretty cushy? is it the 70 that goes down van ness?

its been a handfull of years since i lived in San Francisco, so things may have changed, but i used a system which allowed for a cheaper fare across the bay - not really within the parameters of BART "rules", but i didn't have any ethical issues with that. I would get on at some stop in the east bay, and when exiting on the SF side would use a fast-pass at the fare gate (ie. fare not deducted)...going the other way i would enter BART/MUNI with a fast-pass, and exit one stop away from the stop where i previously entered on the East Bay side - so i was only charge the fare for going one stop. i suppose its only effective if you use/have a fast-pass, and don't mind a little walk, or hopefully a longer ride if you are towin' yer sled. i also remember taking the owl train across the bay in the small hours of the night as well - i might be remembering incorrectly, but i want to say the fast-pass allowed me a cheaper rate on that as well?

Yea I'm currently living in Corte Madera, but moving to the panhandle on the 1st. It's a pretty ride, but it's long, the bus goes slow, and comes infrequently, and is often overcrowded. It takes me about an hour and a half to get to work, which is about double the time it would if I was in a car. You do the same ride 2x a day, 5x a week it gets a little old (and have been crossing it regularly for 20+ years), no matter how pretty it is. I take the 70 or 80 (theyre basically the same, one just goes further north.)

I was thinking about taking the ferry if the weather stays nice though. I like the ferry.

man, old transit scams are the best. the easiest is just to have the bike as a prop, thus allowing you to enter and exit through those nice swingy doors instead of through the pay-to-play gates where the normal commuters insert their silly bart cards. you just walk right in and walk right out.

i think all "in sf" stops cost the same when riding on bart, emb to glenn park? someone else might have that info handy, or the website would too.

remember when caltrain was awesome? off peak pricing, buying tickets on the train, lying to the conductor and saying you got on at the last stop when really you got on three zones ago? aw, 1996 was a good year. $3 got you from sunnyvale to san francisco.

do you know that bike shop in sausalito? i forget the name, but they had some serious deals... its on that main strip, after all the lame taffy shops and faux-art galleries.
