Quite! 20 years on one set of tire? That shows how much the tires had ever been out!

I guess even a $200 bike can sit quite nicely for 20 years and looking like new.

Actually while walking the dog today by a bus stop there was a completely intact mtb thrown in the weeds (no doubt stolen). So I would say one can still get a $200 bike for free.

I did pull the bike out of the weeds and set it up so it was visible to the neighborhood and the next thief.

That's a piece of crap. If you're smart you find an older higher end bike with low miles that someone bought to get into cycling but after a couple of rides they said screw that. After they let it sit in the garage for a few years they put it up for sale cheap just to get rid of it.

My $100 bike.

Unfortunately it is possible to spend a lot of money on a used absolute piece of crap if you are totally clueless. I came across a discussion about a used tandem recumbent for sale at another site. The buyer was interested in buying it so that he and his 12 year old disabled daughter could ride together. The asking price was $2K. The tandem is a bottom-of the-line 70 pound tandem. The seller explained that he bought it 7 years ago to ride with his own disabled son. When asked about the condition, the seller replied that it was like-new and had only 100 miles on it. I was astounded that the prospective buyer didn't see that as a bright red flag. How on earth did this person think that he and his 12 year old daughter would have a better time pedaling this behemoth than the first owner?

Is it good to see that? I quick scrolled thru the top 15 reviews and 2/3 of em are 1 star.
There is no chance that bike is designed or built to endure actual mountain biking.

Anyone ignorant enough to buy it expecting to hit the trails will most likely be disappointed relatively quickly.
And anyone buying it to just ride on paved MUPs would be better off buying a rigid frame with wide tires like a hybrid since that will have better parts for the money, have better features(like water bottle bosses), and likely weigh less.

If someone had $300 to spend, I would steer them to either craigslist with me showing them specific options, or send them to our local bike collective where they will be able to buy a competently re-assembled used bike with components that should last longer than a few hard rides.

Inflation makes used goods appreciate in price also. Replacement cost of goods.

My $200 bike has been fine for commuting, errands, and beginner trail rides.
This is adequate for most people who are just dabbling.

I'm familiar with your posting history. From my understanding you have done little to none of that kind of riding, and most of your rides were like 5 minutes long. You complained that you found anything more than about a half hour completely tedious., You also complained that the bike doesn't seem to fit you well, and I believe you mentioned quick onset of fatigue and some pain.

Why would you see yourself as fit to be recommending anything to anyone else about this? You either actually don't like bicycling or you really haven't sorted out getting a suitable bike for doing more.

Given your posting history, I think a more accurate title to this thread would be "I try to ride a $200 mtn bike I bought 20 years ago, and I pretty much hate it."

You have a bike that hasn't been worn out by being garaged for 20 years. So?

It seems that you have little-to-no understanding of economics. Why choose dollars as your comparative metric? Why not pounds weight?

It seems like the days of 30 pound mountain bikes are gone. What is the new weight point for an entry-level mountain bike today?

That would stimulate better discussion. See?

How about if we compare pound per dollar?

OP has made it clear in a very long series of threads he's started that he knows next to nothing about bicycling and bicycles, yet sees fit to lecture people about both.

Not sure what you mean by regular people.

And as the title of the article states "Cheap Mountain Bikes" those bikes are junk and are full of junk components.

Bad logic. I've bought amazing guitars that were barely touched and were mint condition. Does not mean the guitar is faulty. Just means seller didn't use it for a multitude of reasons, including maybe just being lazy.

Good as new!

Is this the same bike that was blocking your sperm tubes?

A guitar doesn't have mechanical moving parts like a bike. Poor comparison.

Tuners don't move?
You don't know much about guitars.

If we're talking about acoustic guitars, though, you really have to e able to check for the deterioration that could be caused by just sitting. Wood warps and cracks.

I think the whole problem with the argument is that long disuse can be a really good thing or a terrible thing. A really old cheap bike is probably not going to be much of a find so the downside risk that it's disused because use of it sucks probably outweighs the possibility you're getting a really good deal.

Seriously, how exciting could finding a mint condition 20 year old guitar with a MSRP of $75 be?

My Serotta basically sat unused for 25 years before I bought it last year. Best bike I've ever owned.

Yes, but you have to know a fair amount about guitars before you can tell the difference. Long disuse by itself is a completely ambiguous indicator.

Lol. I've been playing guitar for 34 years...both electric and acoustic. I know plenty about them. Trying to compare an old guitar to a bike is apples and oranges.

I have an American Strat with custom SD pickups that I bought for $500 or so.
Mint condition and barely touched. One of my 2 "buy it for life" guitars.

Better yet, why not compare bikes to wines. The older the better!
