Microshift 8s vs Shimano ST R3030 9v

Grateful if somebody can advise:

I run a Microshift 3x8 on a bike for trainer. The right shifter (8v) looks damaged, as it shifts down 2-3 cogs instead of 1 while shifting. I am wondering whether a Sora right shifter ST R3030 9v can be a good replacement. I also consider changing Microshift 8v cassette to Shimano 9v cassette.
In general, I know that Microshift is compatible with Shimano, but I would like to know whether the above change from 3x8 Microshift to 3x9 Shimano is compatible with whole setup (including rear hub).

IF you want a new shifter get your choice of 8 or 9 and a cassette to match.
If you go to 9, you'll also need a 9 speed chain, along with the cassette.
Replacing a rear shifter is absolutely the best scenario cost wise, if you want to upgrade to 9.
Your chain rings will be fine re: 8 vs 9 speed.

Don't mix 8 & 9. They don't index the same.

Thanks very much for the answer.
I had some difficulties in finding all 9 speeds elements, but I managed to find some parts for 10 speeds - Shimano Tiagra: 10 speeds right shifter plus 10v cassette and chain.
The question now is whether this 10v Tiagra setup matches the actual setup, grateful if you can further advice:

Actual setup:
- A hub that carries a Sunrace 8 speeds cassette 12-25
- Microshift rear derailleur, long cage. It keeps now minimum 1.5 cm distance from biggest cog (25) and has a large reserve for stretching 3 extra teeth.
- A triple crank

Replacement:
-Tiagra 10 speeds right shifter
-10 speeds Shimano cassette 12-28
-Shimano chain 10 speeds

Thanks

I don't do 10 speed and you may have some incompatibilities with road vs mountain bits.

I would not do a 3X10. A "mountain" RDER with the wide selection of 9 speed cassettes available should give you plenty of close spaced gearing options.
I'm done because I do11 speed the same amount as 10 (none) and you are changing the conditions.

It would be useful to let the next person know what kind of bike you have. There's differences between road and "other".

Sorry, I should have mentioned from the start: it is a road bike. It is a relatively cheap road bike, used on a trainer.

Thanks

10 speed Tiagra is an anomaly as it uses 11 speed cable pull and will only index 10 speed with a Tiagra 10 speed derailleur.

  • Compatible only with RD-4700 rear derailleur and FD-4700 front derailleur
