590 mm - 650A, English 26 x 1 3/8" E.A.3 Tyres replacement

Can you simply replace the originally equipped 590 mm - 650A, English 26 x 1 3/8" E.A.3 tyre with commonly available 26"x1.5" mountain bike tyres? Will the rim accept it properly?

Nope! The rim diameter is totally different. But tires are still made in this size (I just built a 650A bike and love the ride): https://sheldonbrown.com/harris/tires/590.html

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

+1, the metric or ERTRO size tells the story. your EA-3 tire is xx-590, mtn tires are xx-559, so you're looking at a difference in diameter of 41mm.

Thanks. I'm sorry, but a similar topic has already been posted below.

26 x 1 3/8: bead seat diameter 590mm. Traditional “English racer” size, and used on American-built single- and three-speeds and inexpensive bike boom 10-speeds. Also known as 650A and EA3. Obsolete for new OEM bicycles in the USA, but widely available in bike shops, hardware stores and big boxes. Common in Japan where it is used on new bicycles, and common legacy size in the UK and throughout the British Commonwealth. This is also a common wheelchair tire size.
