I'm simple, I see a Miyata with cantis, I buy it.
Got on the road early to be the first at the yard sale to buy this bike:
Mystery Miyata with Cantis.
Turns out it was an '85 610, and a garage kept time capsule at that!

Beautiful bike, yes that is a chainstay protector, it just prevents any kind of chain slap from messing up the paint on the stay during shifting.

Lazer beam attachment or not, that's a super clean find. The Miyatas from that era do not disappoint.

Could you show us a photo taken from the front or back showing the cantis in detail? That might pinpoint the year of my Miyata 610 I acquired in 1990 when my previous fix gear died. I rode it about a day and liked the those Shimano cantis so much I took the Mafacs of my Mooney and put those on, 30 years later, they are still there.
The Miyata never got the glory. My year-round workhorse. Several hard crashes. 18 years and 27,000 miles under me. It as too big and too short so I had an enormous stem made that was a revelation and started me lengthening the stems on all my bikes. Died in an ignominious wreck I walked away from unhurt. It was never much to look at in my hands, but what a well made frame! Zero issues. It's going to hang on to second place in the mileage totals for another few years.

Explain the canti advantage please. I have an 83 Miyata 610 that I am trying to work all the noises out of. Do Cantis facilitate an easier wheel size change? I absolutely love my 610. If I can get every tick, ping, and rattle worked out it will move to the front of the line.

Sweet, you found my bike’s twin. 😁 I just bought that exact bike in that exact color, not very long ago. 😎 You got the Sansin Gyro-Master hubs, didn’t you? These are easily the nicest hubs I’ve ever used. 👍

Thanks! Those are the brakes. So my 610 was probably an '85 and that was the time Shimano was making those wonderful calipers (that are near perfect copies of the old Mafacs, geometry-wise but so much nicer to work on). I wish Shimano made far more of those. Mine are still in use and have (very roughly) 30,000 miles with me

Still learning
My lady friend was kind enough to grab this for me earlier this month, as it was close to her home. The thick layer of dust kept the paint in immaculate shape.
