6800 ultegra ss r derr question

Can I pair sora2020 shifters with a 6800 ultegra rear derr and expect it to be functional (shifting smoothly as it should)? Or... Even after adjustment, the derr won't shift properly with the sora cassette? (I'm trying to avoid the complicated drop bar set up process, and getting a u6800 shifter, lever X2 set)
Thanks (:

The SORA is 9-speed? If so, a 6800 rear derailleur won’t work.

I was able to make an (MTB) 11spd xtr work with a 10spd XT cassette... but limiting two cogs is a stretch... I'm very unfamiliar with road bike stuff... If it won't work, I'll go further to get a 10 speed cassette and freebody hub, and shifter set... Can anyone tell me if that'll work? Would 6800 would shift 10 speeds? What are the limitations, complications???

The only way to have an Ultegra 6800 shift 10 speeds is to use a Tiagra 4700 shifter

6800 ultegra ss r derr question

Thanks for the replies. I will wait and see (I am waiting for the 6800 ss derr in the mail). I forgot to mention that I understand the difference in shift capability. I am going to limit the 6800 derr in shifting only 9 speeds. (I hope that it's possible and still retain the smooth shifting). The ratio of these cassettes are nearly all the same: 11-34, 11-32, etc.

I also forgot to mention that I do not intend to buy another cassette. I want the Ultegra to shift 9 speeds, and was asking if it was possible to limit it to do that. I think the limitation is possible through the Sora shifters... Because it is designed to handle only 9 shifts. So in that case, I don't need to worry so much, and I will change the pulleys from the (month old) Sora to the (new) Ultegra so I won't need to get another chain. Yes, it is crude and savage to be modifying a perfectly good 6800 derr, but I don't think the sacrifice is that great. I am going for Ultegra 6800's smooth and silent shifting, not its shifting range. (Coming from someone who has ridden an mtb with an XT drivetrain for many years). ...Sora shifting is somewhat very loud and very clunky. There is some hesitation on each shift, especially when pedalling.

All I hope for, now, is that the spacing in an Ultegra cassette is the same as a Sora's cassette... So the distance between the cogs on the cassette are the same, and that the pull of the cable in the Sora shifter/brake is the same as an Ultegra shifter/brake.

....Or else I'll have to spend a lot more $$$ and still won't know if the issue is the cassette or shifter combo.... On a month old bike. ):

I'll do anything for smoother and more silent shifting (: I hope it all works out.

The reason it doesn’t work is because the design of the 6800 rear derailleur changed. In the past, Shimano derailleurs moved a certain amount based on the cable pull from the shifter. Shimano changed that ratio so the amount of cable pull moves the derailleur a different amount.

I have read it changed from 1.7mm for every mm of cable pull to around 1.4mm for every mm. So if your shifter pulls 2mm of cable the old standard would move the derailleur over 3.4mm, now it only moves it 2.8mm. These numbers are only examples, I haven’t taken the time to measure actual cable pull.

Cable pull ratio is different and this will never work well.

Mixing 10 and 11 speed Shimano MTB stuff works better because Dynasys derailleurs have the same cable pull ratio.

check youtube. There is a compatibility guide....

Youtube: Shimano Shifter/ Derailleur Compatibility Guide: Intro to Pull Ratios
Jump to 5:17
..... But there is still certainly room for incompatibility.

Well, the video also says it won't work. How did you get the idea that it would, if you don't mind sharing?

It will not work well.
Stop asking for advise if you plan to ignore all of it.

I appreciate everyone's advice. It's hard to know who is who and which advice I can follow...
However, I always want to try to push the limit.
Again, I am thankful for everyone's advice.
