Giant escape disc 1 vs Trek FX3

Hi,

I am looking for a new hybrid bike which I plan on using for a few different purposes: leisure riding with friends in well paved roads, riding with my family (3-5 yo kids and potentially a child bike seat for the younger nephew) and also some beginner / light trail - nothing technical, just unpaved roads.

My price range is around 1000 to 1200 Australian dollars (around 700-850 US)

From what I read I don’t want a suspension (in this price range they are apparently bad and just add to weight and maintenance cost), and I also wanted a carbon form to add to comfort, especially in the unpaved riding.

From what I read, the Trek FX3 2020 or 2021 would be a very good choice (although I might need to replace the 32c tires with 35c for unpaved riding), but due to Covid I can’t find my size where I live.

Any feedback on the Giant Escape 1 Disc 2020? (Goes by another name in Australia, but the same specs). Looking at the specs it seems even better than the trek as both have carbon forks but the Giant has an Alivio / Acera group set whereas the Trek is Acera only. The Giant is probably heavier (couldn’t find the weight stats) as it gave 38C tires. Also, the Giant is probably slower than the trek because of the tires, but will probably ride better in unpaved roads. But as I am not planning on riding fast, would not be an issue.

Any other brands / models I should consider?

I am not a specialist, just gathered some info online through research and any comments are welcome!

Thanks!

Welcome. It sounds like you're on the right track. You've found the Giant Escape and Trek FX. Others in this segment include the Specialized Sirrus and Cannondale Quick. There are others by Scott, Merida, etc. I'm not sure what brands are available Down Under, but I imagine you have access to some of these and possibly others as well.

I will strongly advise you to test-ride a new model, if you can. Different frames from different manufacturers will have slightly different geometry and a different feel. It's hard to look at paper specs and know for sure which bike will be the best fit for you. Sometimes, one bike just feels right to you. I'd also concentrate less on component groups and more on things like style and color. As silly and cosmetic as that might sound, all the components in a given price range will be about the same and perform about the same...and you can change them anyway if you really want to. But something like frame color cannot be changed, at least not inexpensively. Also, get to know your local bike shop...if they'll be helping you maintain the bike and advocating for you with regard to any warranty work, you want to have a good feeling about that shop and the folks who work there. If you think you might want brand X, but the people at the shop who sell brand X are real jerks, then that might be something to consider.
