Great!
"The Eternal Second" obviously had a good sense of humor.

Love the pink Mercier and how casually left it outside with the pedal being used to keep the bike from falling over in front of the store.
I need to get my 1970 kelly green Mercier 300 project off the ground! It's been stalled as I have too many projects.

Amusing!
As Brent notes, it's certainly a sign that Mr. Poulidor has come to terms with his career and can joke about it.
He was pretty well loved by the fans too, wasn't he? Everyone loves a guy who works hard but can't quite get the win. Not hard for most of us to identify with that story??

The French were divided in the sixties by whether they supported Poulidor, the rustic, religious country boy or Anquetil, the cosmopolitan, sometimes scandalous champion of the Tour de France. I think Poulidor was the most loved in spite of his lesser palmares.
I'm sure others here can fill in the details much better than can I.

This looks like it was filmed during his career.

Pretty fun.
the horn blowing I did not experience while riding around Paris. Actually is was pretty easy at the roundabouts such as the Bastille even, pick up the tempo just a bit and you were in the flow of traffic. I would call drivers bike aware.
big advantage on a bike was that if a truck was holding up one way traffic while stopped making a delivery, one could ride right through.

Funny thing, the press seemed to frame him as an aloof cosmopolitan -- a reputation he seemed to enjoy cultivating -- but the real Anquetil was a country boy who returned to farm life after cycling.
And he left a trail of kids who looked exactly like him in every town along the Tour de France route.
Too bad he didn't live long enough to write, or have ghost written, his autobiography. It would have been a doozy.

I looked a few times to make sure and I think he's really riding when he so casually unwraps the jersey and puts it on. A modern commercial, the rider would be on a trainer on a trailer or in front of a green screen. ****** move.
