Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Why a brake is a nice idea

Taking a little detour along an unofficial off-road trail, a stick few up and knocked the chain off while I was pedaling pretty hard. It's an old Bendix coaster hub, not the greatest, but gets the job done, until it doesn't. Fortunately the bike has a hand brake.

Glad you're safe! Had a couple similar issues, one with a chain failing bombing down a hill at about 30 mph, and one similar to yours off-road with shrubbery interfering with the chain. Very grateful for the brakes!

I run brakes because they are safer and I don't have young tree trunk legs.

Fortunately, stopping a coaster brake bike requires nowhere near as much strength as stopping a fixie. Unless the chain falls off, in which case, equal strength.

ride braked unless your goal is to be a YOU TUBE fixie star ... and it wouldn't be a bad idea to always ride with the brake covered ... I confess that in moments of idiocy I have been fixed wo brakes and skidN with a brake is a lot better than skidN wo a brake

Fortunately it's not a fixie. That would be a bridge too far for me.

Chain stuff while riding is the worst. I snapped 1 and got my pant leg caught in 1, always scary.
