lol...why would you not believe that? It's highly plausible that it was just kept stored and cleaned

Highly doubtful it was his grandfather's. I'd guess it's likely late 70s - early 80s, but I'm sure more knowledgeable folks will chime in soon. Regardless, old Raleighs are nice, fun to ride bikes imo.

As for more info, a full side view photo from the drive side would help, along with detail photos (take time to focus and use good light or a flash) of the decals/branding. Serial number might also be of use. What does the decal on the seat tube, between the mid-stays and the derailleur, say?

It looks to be a Raleigh Record Limited Mixte from 1977. The bike is 44 years old now and a Mixte, its certainly old enough to have belonged to someones Grandfather. If Grandfather was getting up there in years by 1977, and was having a hard time throwing a leg over a top tube, a Mixte frame would be a great pick. Other people simply like the look and character of this type of bike; either way, unless there are more details, there is nothing implausible about the sellers story. Its a cool looking bike! What do you plan to do with it?

It does look new! If you dont mind my saying, it would look really great with a set of chrome fenders on it. Just a thought.

Couldnt have said it any better myself my grandfather Guadalupe villareal was born in 1887 and died in 1946. His brother Ignacio "nacho" Villareal played baseball for the monterray marinos he was a starting pitcher 1909 to 1911the rest of his career was not well recorded so i do not know that much about it but i have a 8 x 10 photo of him wearing the hat and uniform with a glove on dated august 1909

You’re going to want to replace those tires; they did not hold up well.

I still stand by the rest of my comment about old Raleighs being fun to ride, however.

A great example of a survivor. I love survivors.

Doesn't matter - it still needs new tires if anyone wants to ride it.
Someone called me 'late 70s' last week. Hell, I'm only 76! ... Which is the 2nd, late, half of my 70s, I hope!

That frame is tall for a mixte, probably 23" Fairly unusual and a good find for the right person. Might want to measure to verify and put that info in the ad. Know what you have.

Inaired up the dry rotted tires and it held air so i tried to ride it and when i tried pedaling it stiffened up i think the bottom bracket bearings went bad.

Dribble some light oil into the BB from both sides and give the crank several spins. It'll probably loosen up. Can't believe the bearings would be bad when you consider how nice the bike looks. Just dry.

How freely does it spin backward?
