Vintage Cannondale

If anyone knows anything about the year this could be made in. It’s been difficult to find a similar model to compare. All knowledge is good knowledge. Thanks in advance!

It is approx 25 years old. It’s a long wheel touring bike which was made in the USA. It goes too far back for me to research who and when the bike was sold. It will be challenging to build up because the old parts needed are difficult to find.

Pic assist C-dale T-800, just looked online and maybe around 2009. Lots of parts out there for a bike like this. Look carefully for frame damage before rebuilding.

Apparently I’m not allowed to post any pics or links until after my 10th post on here. It’s been tricky to find info on it. It’s definitely a bit older that. The bike shop owner that sold it to the owner approximately 25 years ago. He wasn’t going to go through that many years of sales data but said it was long wheel made in USA Aluminum very light .

it’s a little bit worn but overall very nice piece well crafted. Owner of the shop said it’s not worth it for me to try to build up due to shortage of vintage parts and I don’t know much about cycling. I acquired this Frameset and believe it’s been raced, toured, what not. The serial number is in a different format than any others in old catalogs.

It says Cannondale T800 CAAD3 made in USA Aluminum. It’s dark green and comes with some of the extra parts.

Unfortunately I can’t post photos of it because I’m a newbie on here. But if anyone has any knowledge all is kindly appreciated.

Not too hard to find, go here and click on the year of catalog you want and it will put a pdf in your downloads folder, at least on windoze. It certainly isn't early 90's and the late 90's usually had the Caad3 on the top tube. I still think it's 2000's but no matter, you'll find it. We have a way of finding your pics that you try to upload so find the year and post some more and we'll get there.

The shop owner is mistaken - to put it gently. I just put an even older Cannondale, a c. 1986 ST400, back on the road. I bet if you measure the space between the dropouts in the rear it’s 128 or 130 mm, either of which will take any modern rim brake road wheel set in 700c built in the last 30 years or so. Everything else is standard dimensions.

I can assure you that there is no shortage of vintage parts to build this bike. Many members here could build this bike with mostly period correct parts without too much difficulty. We're pretty familiar with C-dales, they get a lot of respect even though steel is generally the frame of choice on C&V.
Many shop owners say the same thing just because they can't order the parts but the used market is extensive and deep.

There were no CAAD3 frames pre-1990. Based on the limited description this sounds like the 2001 model. Here's the 2001 catalogue; https://vintagecannondale.com/year/2001/2001.pdf

If its a Cad3 bike it is likely late 90;s early 2000.s cad 3s were made late 93 to 2001. Yet most were made around 2000 .

That frame will accept current components, no problem. I built up a much older (1994?) T700 using 10 speed brifters and a compact double. Sounds as if the shop didn't want to be bothered. Time for DIY or find a friend.

It looks mid to late 2000’s but if so the CAAD3 decal is a puzzler. It has those features but it would seem like self inflicted marketing injury to point them out ten years later

I agree with everyone, getting parts to fit should be no problem at all. This was a touring bike and buyers want to trust they can keep it running, it’s not a go-fast bike built to the latest fad.

the shop owner is an idiot: That is wearing a 9 speed era rear derailleur and modernish Deore cranks. It looks like you have most of the parts, you just need a set of wheels. Shifters may begunked up so might want to spray them liberally with wd 40 and work them back and forthto clean them out, but these bikes also are popular to have bar end shifters

I will note that it is amazing how effective a liberal spraying of WD-40 is in clearing out all sorts of shifter-fouling gunk.

If this bike fits you, it is well worth putting it to rights. If you don't want to go the DIY route, look around for another bike shop. Because it's a touring model, it will take decently large tires, which soak up road shock beautifully.
