Here's a picture of mine. Like it, and found no problem with the original BB. Very comfy ride, smooth, quiet and shifts nicely with the Suntour barend shifters. No, the seat tube is not bent, it's distortion.

By 1994, the CrissCross became TIGed plain gauge 4130 frame and fork. Weighed 28 lbs stock and came with Glen bars, Gripshifts SIS 7speed Shimano Alivio. It was the 2nd highest offering in the cross line, following the CrossCut. The geometry got more sporting, modern compact sloping TT frame with 73/72 degree angles.

I recently bought a 94 CrossCut w/ DB CR-MO tubing throughout and weighing in at 26 lbs stock.

And yes, these are fantastic bikes if you can find one.

Love all the drop bar hybrid conversions in this thread! I have had a few of these bikes and they compare well to the Trek MT 7xx series. Ranging from plain gauge to double butted tubesets I echo the sentiment that you can find reasonable to exceptional deals depending on the model year.

"Hybrid" can be an ugly ugly term, but these bikes are great.

Here's mine, 1991 I think, sorry about the cell phone pic. Powder coated and built up as a 1x8 for state parks, commuting and pulling my daughters trailer. I didn't use any original parts so everything except the frame and the Avocet seat are brand new. It now has a rack on the back, too. This is my second effort on one. The first was damaged by the powder coaters, who were sorry and happy to compensate me. But it took me a pretty long search to find the first one. Oddly enough one popped up ebay not 2 miles of where I work with in the same week.

Wow, that's a lot on info. Very helpful...just bought a used Criss Cross in pretty decent shape for $100. Apparently that's high, but I'm still pretty happy with the decision. This will now be my grocery-getter and commuter so my Specialized Allez can be my full-time serious road bike (new shoes and pedals on the way for that!). Looking forward to getting it tuned up and running smooth.

Welcome to the forums!

A Schwinn Criss-Cross in decent shape for $100 is a good buy. They are very versitel and you should have fun building it up in different ways.

I keep remembering my FIL has a Criss-Cross hanging in the rafters that he's never going to use.

So I just got this brilliant idea- powdercoat it something other than the pinkish/purple that it is- I was thinking the old Schwinn green... get a mishmash of 60s Schwinn Decals- Continental fork decals, Schwinn starburst downtube decals, the "S" Crome Molybdenum seat mast...

While scoping out the ideas on the Googles... noticed that Cuda2k had pretty much the same idea with his Crosscut:

The middle gear at the crank is lop sided. Is it supposed to be this way? I see models do. What is the purpose for this? Mine is a 27". Thanks

Just the middle? I'd say it's Biopace, but then usually it's all of them unless somebody only replaced the outside rings. Anyway, it was a Shimano design that was supposed to reduce the 'flat spot' in your pedal stroke. Search on it and you should be able to find plenty of info and opinions. Here is a pic of a full triple crank set up:

The Criss Cross seemed to change a bit from model year to model year, but it should be a pretty versatile bike, capable of being equipped a number of different ways -- flat bars, or drops, etc. etc. One thing that was pretty unusual was that in '93 (I think that was the only year) the rear derailleur was the funky SunTour S-1, which mounted on the chain stay ahead of the rear dropout. It faced backwards, and probably would have made rear wheel removal awkward if not for a large chain holder mounted to the dropout (if that was broken or removed, good luck). The Criss Cross may have been the only production bike anywhere to use it. The S-1 derailleur mounted to a special braze-on boss on the chain stay, but luckily the dropout still had a traditional derailleur hanger -- so if someone has that version and wants to (or needs to) replace the derailleur, it would be possible to replace it with a "normal" one. However, something would need to be rigged to serve as a cable housing stop, since there isn't one. Clamp-on stops are available on the vintage market.

By the way, the SunTour S-1 was like a modern version of the very cool French Nivex derailleur from 1938 -- one of the first parallelogram type derailleurs. I had some info about it (as well as a bit about the S-1) on The Retrogrouch Blog. The Retrogrouch: Nivex: The Grandfather of Parallelogram Derailleurs

Resurrected thread.
Here is mine that I got a few years ago for $20 at a yard sale. I fixed it up for my son as a college bike. He used it for a couple of years until he found a Trek 700 at the college bike auction that was a better fit. It is hanging in the rafters of the garage now.

-- yes, quite the zombie thread here....
anyways, I'm getting into a bike project kind of mood. this CrissCross is on my local CL for $40.
Lugged, double butted True Temper, canti-posts. -- meets my main requirements.
https://waterfordbikes.com/SchwinnCa...0/1991_16.html

Any idea if these were sourced out of Taiwan?
Anyone have geometry details? The catalog pages do not. The photo makes the top tube look longer than the seat tube, so maybe riser bars if I want to go with this. I was leaning a bit more toward a rando-style project bike. Don't think even a Technonumononic will let me use drop bars on this frame. I usually go about a 58~60cm frameset with drop bars.

Maybe we make this thread the "show me your CrissCross thread.
cheers.

oh - PS: seller is listing size as 21in. The catalog lists 20in or 22in..... so dunno...

got lugs?

For $40 I'd buy it and try it. If it doesn't work I'm sure you can still sell it for $40. Depending on the year some of these had Oddish geometry with longer top tubes. Not anything that is way unmanageable or anything, best to just try it out. I believe these are Taiwanese made, but they are well made. Probably a '92, but that is a total SWAG without looking anything up.

I have an 18" crosscut and a 20" crosspoint. Going by the headtube, that one looks like 22". The decal on my crosspoint looks the same on the downtube e.g. "design USA"-> not made in the USA. I ride them when I want a more upright position and wider cushier tires. I put 35c paselas on them but I think they came standard with 38c.

Yup, 1992 based on the branding, made in Taiwan. A step down from the CrossCut, but I think it's the same frame, just a component difference. Would have had the Suntour X-Press shifters, which was not exactly their crowning achievement. To me, the Schwinn "...Cross..." series don't have as upright/relaxed a feel as the other hybrids of that era. Maybe it's the above-mentioned longer top-tube.

Specs include angles, but not TT/ST lengths: https://waterfordbikes.com/SchwinnCa...cc_specsb.html .
