You no longer need to pedal your bike.

But then you need to carry a 6mm Allen, just to get the wheels off the bike.
Oh and a Torque wrench to put them back on.
However, I much rather have the wheels come off, only when I want them to come off.

TLDR;
So yes, we bolt our wheels on, but the bolt did get a fancy name.

No need for an Allen key on any of my through axles bikes. They all have levers, hidden on the Canyon.

With the pandemic shortage and inflation, good road bikes also cost $5K. Sigh.

Yeah, I was shocked by the prices of the few bikes my local shop had. Same for most luxury recreation items right now. I bought a new Seadoo jetski last year and prices are through the roof. Dealerships can pretty much ask what they want and they aren't negotiating. If you don't like the price, the next guy will. I'm on a waiting list for another Seadoo (my wife decided she wants her own). You can't find them at the dealerships anymore. All sold out pretty much across the country. If you see one at a dealership, it is likely already sold. Used ones are going for almost new prices.

My buddy bought two new Yamaha Waverunners recently. Used them a few times and decided he wanted a boat instead. The boat dealership on the other side of town literally gave him what he paid. He didn't lose a penny. Took the money and bought the one and only boat available on the lot. This is a big-time boat dealership that typically has dozens of boats available. They only had one for sale. And it was only available because the guy who was originally supposed to buy it backed out earlier in the day. My friend just happened to walk in the moment it became available. Again, price was not negotiable.

The market for pretty much anything is crazy.

Wish that was the problem, unfortunately the current situation is all a result of governments interfering with the supply chain. If Covid hadn't shut everything down things wouldn't be this way.

Yes, if capitalism was allowed unfettered, the workers in the supply chain would have been forced to get COVID as God intended. Curses, governments!

I also think this is only part of "the problem" . There's also been wild fluctuations on the demand side that supply chains were not designed to deal with. Try buying a new car right now and you bidding against the rental car companies trying to rebuild their fleet after selling much of it off last year.

No one saw demand for bikes spiking in the US like it did last year, and years of accumulated unsold inventory of bikes and parts was sold almost overnight.

Got the bike back from the shop yesterday. Cost about $300 to get her back in shape. Got a general tune up and lube, fixed a broken spoke, new bar tape, rear derailleur shift cable, bottom bracket adjustment, replaced both tires and both brake calipers. Got an itemized list of all the parts and was pleasantly surprised that I was charged pretty much retail for everything. I looked up the Tektro R540 brakes and the Conti GP 4 Season tires and they charged me Amazon prices...no huge markup. Pretty happy with everything.

Got the bike home and was excited to take her out. Got my shoes that I've been using on the Peloton and realized that the cleats don't fit on my Look Keo pedals. Peloton uses Delta cleats. It was a good excuse to order a new pair of Fizik shoes with the proper cleats.

Anyway, I can't wait to get back in the saddle!

I don't live on a lake. I live on a canal that goes into Pensacola Sound. I can take that thing from Ft. Walton to Orange Beach. Lots of cool beach bars along the way to pull up to.

Ahhh...Just like the ATV / Side x Side crowd where I live...they go from bar to bar on the paved back roads and gravel roads. The same roads that they can drive their car on to get to the same bars.

Pointless...

OK. Maybe just the Ultegra disc brake road bikes which I consider to be upgrades to my existing one. Although I cannot possibly be the only one considering those bikes, otherwise they would not have gone up 25% in the last 1.25 years.
